2006USBCWomenNaWahine.jpg Perhaps it has something to do with playing in paradise. But Hawaii's Na Wahine 'O Waianuenue team, bowling in the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus, claim they don't think about their scores.

"Our motto is to come out and have fun," says team captain Caroline Costa, who lists her home as Pahoa, a former sugar-producing town south of Hilo. "Since 1997, I've been bringing teams to Reno to bowl in the women's championships. I just look for compatibility among team members."

When it was hinted that the "frizzy yarn" leis that team members wear around their necks might be intended to conjure up good luck, she dismisses it. "No, we never think that way." At the same time, she admits to having made the leis.

The team name translates into "Ladies of the Rainbow". It's made up of Wendi Lishman, Costa's daughter, who lives not far from her in Kailua; friend Lorrie Cahill from Honolulu; and two Redding, Calif. residents, Antoinette Hodge and Gina Arruda. When asked how the two mainlanders got into the act, Costa explains they're her sisters-in-law.

Costa keeps it pretty much in the family when competing in Hawaii as well, bowling regularly with three daughters, two sisters and still another sister-in-law.

The team's philosophy about fun overriding performance hopefully served them well at the National Bowling Stadium, where they managed a 1,967 series in Division 2 team play (team average of 746-845).

The "Rainbows" are using the Women's Championships as reason for an extended stay on the mainland. After their doubles and singles competition on Wednesday, they head to visit relatives and friends in California, Oregon and Washington before returning to Hawaii in mid-April.
