2006USBCWomensChampionshipLogo.jpg "It seems I rev it up a notch when it comes to tournaments," said Laurie Clark, who moved into the lead in the Classic Singles Division (190 average and over) at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus.

Clark, from Sioux Falls, S. D., and bowling for the KELO FM 92.5 team, took the lead on Friday when she fired a 644 with games of 226, 215 and 203. She and doubles partner Nicole VanDeventer, grabbed first place in Classic Doubles as well with 1,231 (379 average and over). Clark had a 606 series in doubles while VanDeventer contributed 625.

The 39-year-old Clark, who is a mother of three and works as a PC technician in Sioux Falls, says she didn't realize she had taken the lead until her husband, Randy, broke the news some time later during the rush to catch their flight home.

"Of course I was excited when Randy told me, but the reality is, it probably won't be up there very long," she said. "It's still very early in the competition, and there are some great bowlers coming in to compete."

Clark has been bowling for more than 20 years, and in the Women's Championships for the past 10. With a 202 average, she credits part of her success to keeping her emotions intact. "You have to let the bummer frames go," she said. "You can't dwell on them." Apparently that's what she did as she bowled 538 in team play before her 606 in doubles and 644 in singles, which edged out Sara Weimer from Bear, Del., who had posted a 642 in Classic Singles.

Clark credited her husband with having helped her performance. "I couldn't seem to get comfortable at the start, but Randy noticed something in my delivery and suggested I change my mark. After that, I started to find my groove."

While she's proud of her recent showing in the USBC Women's Championships, it 's nowhere near Clark's career best. Her best series is a 774, which she shot in league play.
