Lost equipment arrives just in time for Women's Championships Classic Singles leader

2006USBCWomenAlishaCaballero.jpg Heading to the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships sponsored by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus in Reno from her home in Riverside, Calif. - a short flight, by all standards - Alisha Caballero brought three bowling balls along, only to have them misdirected by the airline. Weighed down by high anxiety wondering whether or not her equipment would arrive didn't stop her from taking the lead in Classic Singles on April 1.

"They almost didn't make it," Caballero said. "They ended up in Boise. They came with me on the plane, and they didn't get off the plane when I did."

Destiny was on her side, though, when - after recovering her bowling equipment - Caballero moved into first place in the Classic Division Singles, with a 678 series, on games of 214, 187 and 277. She also moved into third place in All Events with an 1,832 pinfall.

"It feels pretty good right now," she said with a big smile. "It's a good high."

A bowler for 34 years, Caballero said she started bowling at age 5. Today, the 39-year-old clothing store manager is stumped when trying to remember exactly how many USBC Women's Championships she's actually competed in.

"Less than 10, more than 5," she figured. "I couldn't tell you an exact number."

Caballero bowls twice a week, and holds a 220 average in one league and a 215 in the other.

Caballero credits her favorite sport for helping her connect with her favorite guy, husband Mario.

"If it wasn't for bowling, we would have never met," she recalled with a laugh. "We met at an Easter tournament. We were both junior bowlers, back in '81, '82. We just met as friends. A couple years later, we started dating and next thing we know, we're getting married. Our reception was at a bowling center, because it was a wedding gift, from the manager."

The secret to her success, Caballero noted, is tried-and-true.

"Just practice and coaching. My husband coaches me better than anybody else. He knows my game more than anybody."

Kegel is the official lane maintenance supplier of USBC.
