2006USBCWomensChampionshipLogo.jpg For 16 years, Nancy Galinat worked as a high school custodian, but the Harrold, S.D. bowler cleaned up in a totally different way April 6 - her 58th birthday - at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus.

Galinate moved into first place in Division 3 Singles with a 638 series on games of 236, 216 and 186. Her singles series also helped her take the Division 3 All-Events lead with 1,592. A member of the Golden Girls team, Galinat came to Reno with one 12-pound bowling ball and her 148 average.

"I'm shocked," Galinat said. "This is wonderful. I even placed in the brackets (Women's Championships side events) last night in team competition." A loyal USBC Women's Championships player, 2006 marks Galinat's 22nd year of tournament play, a long-term commitment she was initially reluctant to make.

"They asked me if I wanted to go to nationals, and I thought, 'I'm not good enough to go to nationals,'" she said. "The first year we went to Toledo, Ohio in 1985 on a bus and we had a great time. I've been going ever since."

When Galinat received her awards for 75 pins over game and 140 pins over series, plus the 200 and 225 game awards, she considered just how long her run of luck might last. "I think we'll go gamble," she said.

After bowling 11 strikes in her singles series, Galinat remembered one equipment adjustment that perhaps made all the difference.

"I had my thumb hole re-drilled, because it was too big," noted Galinat. "They put in a plug and it was coming out just perfect. I throw the ball pretty fast. I started slowing down, then I picked up speed and I did OK." An avid quilter, Galinat now is the owner/operator of Quilt Yard in Pierre, S.D.

Kegel is the official lane maintenance provider of USBC.
