El Paso bowlers anticipate USBC Women's Championships in 2010

While they enjoyed competing at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus in the Reno, members of the Shady Ladies team from El Paso, Texas, say the wheels are already in motion to bring the tournament to their own city four years from now.
The USBC Women's Championships will be held in a specially-constructed arena setting on an annual basis, beginning in 2010 at the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center. The tournament, first held in 1916, attracts between 8,000 and 13,000 five-player teams each year. El Paso can expect to realize between $45-$60 million in local economic impact from the event in 2010.
Shady Ladies team captain Carolyne Navar offered a player's perspective on what the USBC Women's Championships mean for their team.
"Unfortunately we won't have the home-based advantage," Navar said. "Now we're going to be on the same lanes as everybody else, because we've never bowled on them before. It doesn't give a house advantage to anybody, and that's the way it should be."
The Shady Ladies, who rolled a 2,182 in Division 2 team play, say they'll be ready to welcome thousands of bowlers to their community.
"Members of the El Paso Women's Bowling Association will probably end up doing a lot of work for the tournament," said Navar. "It takes such terrific amounts of man-hours to put this on, we will have to do a tremendous amount of work before it even gets started, so we're all prepared for that."
Navar also says the event will be an economic shot-in-the-arm for El Paso itself.
"It means a tremendous amount of revenue. We're going to get a much-needed boost in the central area of El Paso. The city will get a big publicity and financial gain, and we'll get a real big boost off of that."
Navar's Shady Ladies teammate, Enriqueta Estrada, concurred.
"It's going to be a good thing for El Paso, because that way we'll be recognized," Estrada said. "People from all over will be coming and that's exciting. The people there are very warm, loving. We have great places to eat and lots of entertainment. I think it's going to be something wonderful for everybody there in El Paso. It's going to be something to look forward to. El Paso is a good place to visit and enjoy bowling. People will be there to help them out with whatever they need."
