Mike DeVaney leads after six games in Cheetah Championship
10/26/10
Mike DeVaney (pictured left) of San Diego averaged 251 for the opening six games of the Brunswick Pro Bowling Cheetah Championship Monday at South Point Bowling Center to take the lead halfway through the first round in the opening event of the Professional Bowlers Association World Series of Bowling.
With another six games remaining later Monday for all players, DeVaney held a three-pin lead over Jeff Carter of Springfield, Ill.
"Getting off to a quick start, especially on the Cheetah pattern, is extremely important," DeVaney, a two-time PBA Tour winner said. "You can't win the tournament today, but you could certainly lose it.
"Actually, the Cheetah is one of the more difficult patterns for me to keep up with other guys, so it's a surprise to be leading, but it's also comforting to be in this position. I've made TV shows on all of the other animal patterns, but not on this one."
Ronnie Russell (right), Marion, Ind., who led Squad A with 1,503 was third with Brian Voss, Alpharetta, Ga., in fourth at 1,499 and Steve Jaros, Yorkville, Ill., in fifth at 1,495.
From the large international contingent three players made it among the top 16. Choi Won-Young, South Korea, was sixth with 1,483. Doubles World champion Mathias Ă…rup (left), Sweden, was tenth with 1,473 and Thomas Larsen, Denmark, was 16th with 1,449. Just outside the box looking in was Mark Buffa, Canada, in 17th place with 1,447.
The Brunswick Pro Bowling Cheetah Championship qualifying round is the opening event of the 2010-11 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season, and the first qualifying leg in the PBA World Championship.
Following Monday's Cheetah round, all PBA World Series of Bowling competitors will bowl four more 12-game rounds on the PBA's Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark lane conditions over the next four days to complete the 60-game PBA World Championship qualifying standings.
While accumulating pins toward the World Championship is a high priority, all players also will face a fresh challenge each day over the first five days. Similar to stages in the Tour de France, the top 16 players after 12 games each day will advance to week two of the World Series, which will be devoted to determining the finalists for the Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark Championships.
In week two, the top 16 on each pattern will bowl nine games of round-robin match play to determine the top five for stepladder finals. The Brunswick Pro Bowling Cheetah Championship match play round will be contested on Monday, Nov. 1. The top five after 21 games will advance to the stepladder finals on Friday, Nov. 5.
Bowling fans around the world are following the action on Xtra Frame, the PBA's exclusive video-streaming service. Full-year, World Series only and one-day trial memberships are available by visiting www.xtraframe.tv.
