Collegiate bowler shines at USBC Women's Championships

With competitive opportunities for youth, high school and collegiate bowlers, the United States Bowling Congress invests in young athletes. The experience and enjoyment of the sport at those levels often determines how seriously a bowler will take up the sport in later years.
A bowler since age 8 and a product of Young American Bowling Alliance (now USBC) youth competition, 22-year-old Candra Turner of Amarillo, Texas, moved into fourth place in Classic Singles (190 average and higher) at the USBC Women's Championships presented by Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus on April 16. Bowling in her second Women's Championships, Turner rolled 658 on games of 226, 227 and 205.
Now a member of the West Texas A & M University women's bowling team, Turner will set her sights on the upcoming 2006 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships April 26-29 in Rockford, Ill.
"Bowling on challenging conditions like we do in collegiate competition prepares you for a tournament like the Women's Championships, said Turner. "We've been practicing three times a week getting ready for the ITC, so that definitely helped. And our coach, Jeff Campbell, also makes us shoot at lots of spares, because it's not always about how many strikes you can get. Whether it be collegiate competition or the Women's Championships, you have to be on top of your spare game."
Turner's West Texas A & M team finished second in the Fort Worth, Texas sectionals in March to earn a spot in the ITC.
"We haven't won a tournament yet, but we're encouraged by our second place finish in sectionals," said the elementary education major. "We're focused on nationals."
For Turner it's been the perfect blend of camaraderie and competition to this point in her young bowling career but there's one constant, and that is practice and hard work.
"We have a great chemistry on our team, but you have to stay focused and work hard, which means a lot of practice," she added. And as the saying goes, practice makes perfect.
Kegel is the official lane maintenance provider of USBC.
