Long-time friends take Doubles lead at USBC Women's Championships

More than 30 years ago, Sharon Cassidy of San Mateo, Calif., and Elaine Van Otten of Pacifica, Calif., met through bowling. Now, that friendship has taken them to the top of the leaderboard at the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus.
Cassidy and Van Otten shot 1,171 Tuesday to take the lead in Division 2 Doubles at the National Bowling Stadium. Cassidy had games of 182, 222 and 228 for a 632 series, while Van Otten added games of 179, 179 and 181 for a 539 series.
"I don't think anybody ever expects to take over first place," said Van Otten, who holds a 159 average and is president of the San Francisco Women's Bowling Association. "You just come up here and nine times out of 10 you're just happy to bowl your average."
In addition to her doubles success, Cassidy, who averages 179, added 553 in singles and 519 in team to move into eighth in Division 1 all-events with 1,704.
"We never had a clue that we were even doing well," Cassidy said. "We don't check the boards or standings. It wasn't until the third game, when the scorekeeper came down and told us."
The pair met through league 33 years ago and have bowled in the Women's Championships and other tournaments for years together.
"We were in the same league, and then after many years of that, we've been bowling on the same team for probably a good 25 to 28 years for nationals," Van Otten said. "We just had our 30th anniversary with our state tournaments, and we've bowled every one together. We've been partners in state and nationals all that time."
