Carrillo rolls eight consecutive strikes, takes second place in Classic Division Singles

Valerie Carrillo of Montebello, Calif., attracted plenty of attention Thursday morning at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus.
Carrillo started the second game of singles with eight consecutive strikes before finishing with a 254 game. She opened with 221 and closed with 216 for a 691 series, good enough for second place in the Classic Division. Shannon Duplantis of New Orleans leads with 707.
"I haven't really had farther than nine straight strikes, from the first frame to the ninth frame," said Carrillo, whose high game is 290. "I usually choke. I don't know why. I get nervous."
This year was the first time Carrillo, 25, has competed in the Women's Championships, but she is far from a rookie when it comes to bowling in tournaments.
"I started in scratch tournaments, like a junior travel league, when I was 10 years old," Carrillo said. "That really helped a lot, bowling against competitive girls and boys. It was very intense."
Carrillo, who had 536 in team and 550 in doubles for 1,777 all-events, said there's no doubt she will plan to make future trips to the Women's Championships.
"I'll try to plan to attend the Women's Championships every year, if my team wants to," she said. "I pretty much go with the flow with them. I like bowling with them. If someone else asks me to bowl with them, I'll do that, too."
