2006USBCWomensChampionshipLogo.jpg If there's any truth to the expression, "life begins at 40," bowler Karen Schmehl is getting off to a great start. On the very day she celebrated her 40th birthday, the Spokane, Wash.-based woman reached another milestone: rolling a 521 series with games of 178, 203 and 140 in Division 4 Doubles competition at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus.

To complement the cake and ice cream on her big day, Schmehl took home official USBC awards, commemorating 100 pins over average game; 140 pins over average series; a 200 game for 160 average or less; and a 500 series pin for 140 average or less.

Entering her second USBC Women's Championships with a modest 92 average, Schmehl said she was surprised at her performance at the National Bowling Stadium. "I just always come out and bowl well," Schmehl said. "The most strikes I had in a row was four. I tried to just pick up my spares. In singles, I had a lot of spares."

Schmehl bowls on the military base in Spokane, where she lives with her husband and children, all of whom, according to the birthday girl, are much better bowlers.

"I just bowl for fun, normally," she insists. "I'm more social. My boys and husband bowl, and they're all 200-average bowlers. I'm the worst bowler in the family. My oldest son was mad because I was going to bowl in the stadium before him. He's going to adult leagues next year, so hopefully he'll bowl here then."

The 2007 USBC Open Championships will be conducted at the National Bowling Stadium.

For the casual bowler who just completed her fourth decade, Schmehl is officially no longer in a league of her own. In team, she rolled 165, 131 and 150 for a 446 series and added games of 120, 166 and 150 in singles for a total pinfall of 1,403 in All-Events.
