Nevada women take first, second in Singles and All Events at USBC Women's Championships

When Wynn Brandon of Reno took over the Division I Singles lead with a 676 series on Sunday at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus, she didn't expect it to last long. Little did she know just how short a time it did last.
"I don't expect it to last," Brandon said. "There are too many really good bowlers coming into town." Brandon's words were prophetic, as literally minutes later on the same squad, Kristine Keisling of Las Vegas came up with a 686 series to beat out her fellow Nevadan.
Keisling, 30, a computer forwarding system employee for the U.S. Postal Service in Las Vegas, has been bowling since age 14 and sports a 180 average. During Keisling's third game of doubles Sunday afternoon, her mother noticed her back swing was falling short. "She told me I wasn't following through," Keisling said. "I asked her 'why didn't you tell me that sooner?'" "Later" proved better than not at all, as Keisling took command in the Division I Singles with games of 211, 234 and 241. Not only did she beat out Wynn Brandon for singles, but she also eked her out for the Division I All-Events lead, 1804 to 1802.
"It hasn't really sunk in yet," Keisling said via phone from San Francisco, where she's visiting before returning to Las Vegas. "The shock still hasn't hit me."
In her third game, which catapulted her into the singles lead, Keisling admitted she refused to look at her score until it was over. She claimed she was just hoping to break 200. Her career high game is 286, but that one did not figure in her career high series of 722.
"There's a long way to go and we'll just wait and see how it holds up," she said. This year marked Keisling's third Women's Tournament in Reno, and she hopes to bowl the USBC Open Championships in Reno next year. By that time she may be married to her "boy friend" James who accompanied her to Reno. "We're talking about it," she said.
Brandon, who barely had time to savor her "15 minutes of fame," moved to Reno from Orange County, Calif., less than five years ago. Age 57 and a widow, Brandon devotes a lot of time to bowling. Sunday through Wednesday she competes in four leagues at High Sierra Bowl.
With an average of 188, her Sunday singles series was well over what she's come to expect. "I'm glad no one had a tape recorder on me," she laughed. "Every time I released the ball, I said 'fingers' out loud to remind myself to give the ball lift."
Apparently it worked, but she also gives credit to Mark Anderson at the National Bowling Stadium Pro Shop. Brandon bought both her Storm balls (15 and 15-1/2 pounds) at the shop, had them drilled and recently had new inserts put in. "Mark really helped my game," she claimed.
Now in her 35th year bowling, Brandon recalls when she first began: "I remember bringing my kids to the bowling lanes when they were still babies. I had to pack diapers and formula and take care of them in between."
Brandon's high career score is 289, and her elusive dream thus far is that perfect game. She's also thirsting after a 200 average. "It used to be 196 in California, but the lanes are different here in Nevada and I have to adjust."
