Former professional Susan Brede marks 30 years at USBC Women's Championships

Former touring pro Susan Brede celebrated her 30th consecutive national tournament this weekend at the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus.
Friday night at the National Bowling Stadium she led her Garden Center team with a 685 series (204, 247 and 234) to take over the seventh spot in the Division I Team competition with a 2,692 pinfall. She admitted to a struggling start in game one. "But I adjusted my mark a little and that gave me more to play with."
The 47-year-old Minnesotan, who holds a 203 average, has been bowling "since age five or six." She was on the women's pro tour in the 1980s and won a national title in 1984. Her team took the Women's International Bowling Congress championship Division I in 1978.
Brede's teammates included Janice Esala (488 series); Amy Kehrberg (554); Judy Woodle (514); and Jan Zarbok (451). For the most part, the team has been together for 16 years.
In doubles and singles on Saturday, Brede rolled 591 and 575 respectively, adding to her earlier 685, to register 1,851 in Classic All-Events (190 average and over).
An old adage says: If you own the dairy you don't have to travel far for the milk. Brede and her brother Charley Meyer own Garden Center Lanes (also her team's sponsor) in Alexandria, Minn., about 120 miles northwest of the Twin Cities. They took over the facility from their parents who established it in 1957, which means they've got a golden anniversary coming up next year.
Does it help a bowler's performance if she owns her own bowling center? "I suppose it can if you choose to take advantage of the fact," she said. "Of course, wherever you go on tour, the lanes are usually a little different from home. But I usually do well at the National Bowling Stadium."
In 2005, Brede was inducted into the Minnesota Women's Bowling Hall of Fame. Her career high series is 853, bowled in 2001.
