Picking up last-minute substitutes helps Florida Team take Division 2 lead at USBC Women's Championships

What began as a last-minute rush to assemble a full team for the 2006 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships, presented by the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus, ultimately resulted in an unexpected stellar performance for the Jax 1 team of Jacksonville, Fla.
After her original teammates abruptly cancelled their plans to compete in the Women's Championships, Jax 1 team captain Peggy Ellis said she scrambled to replace them. The new players clicked and resulted in the team moving into first place in Division 2 team competition with a 2,734 pinfall on May 10.
"First, we didn't have our team together until the deadline to send our money in," Ellis said. "We had a friend find two bowlers for us. Then one bowler backed out, and a couple of weeks ago, we got another bowler over the Internet. Only three of us knew each other, and two had never bowled in a tournament before the Women's Championships. We were late getting in, and we didn't know who we were looking for. It's unbelievable how it came together."
Ellis says that although there was very little shut-eye for the hastily formed team, their combined energy - and capability - began to unfold as soon as they hit the lanes at the National Bowling Stadium.
"We knew it was good, because we started out with a 975 team game. Then we had another 900, so we knew we had a real good shot at first place. We got tired the last game, but we were keeping up with it."
The team was led by one of the substitutes, Barbara Carbary-Bell of Marion, Mich., with a 601 series followed by Dawn Frascello (586), Barbara Klingler (562), Ellis (527) and Patricia Freeman (458).
"If we end up winning or even finishing high in the standings it will be a 'jackpot' we definitely didn't expect," Ellis says. "As long as we don't lose too much on the slots."
