Italian Massimiliano Celli rises to the top in 8th Storm San Marino Open

    Four players crack the top 10 in Wednesday's Squad 9-11; cut for 35th place is now 1234 (205.67 average)

    2012EBT11MassimilianoCelli.jpg2012EBT11DanielVezis.jpgMassimiliano Celli (pictured left) of Italy started the eleventh qualifying squad of the 8th Storm San Marino Open Wednesday evening at Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle with a low game of 203 but rebounded with three 240s and two 220s to rise to the top of the overall standings.

    Celli toppled 1388 pins, an average of 231.33 over six games, to surpass previous leader Daniel Vezis (right) by 24 pins. The 17-year-old two-hander from England slipped to second place with 1364.

Jussila (left), the No. 10 in the 2011 European Bowling Tour point ranking, led Squad 10 with 1360 (226.67) including a high game of 268. Ranta (right) was mere three pins behind with 1357 including high games of 268 and 267.

    Yoan Alix of France fell from second to fifth place with 1333 and was followed by Renato Bortolon of Italy in sixth place with 1329 and Maurizio Celli, Massimiliano's father, in seventh place with 1322.

Celli, Jussila, Ranta and Karlsson sit atop the separate leaderboard of Squad 9-11. The top 4 of this list including Thursday's Squad 12-14 will earn automatic berths into Sunday's finals.

    Rounding out the top 10 were Serge Frouvelle and Laurence Gaillard (right) of France with 1318 apiece. Gaillard is the best of 13 women in the 158-player field from 13 countries and sole woman in the top 35 who will survive qualifying by pinfall total.

    2012EBT11AndreaCella.jpgAndrea Cella (right) of Italy, who set the pace on Wednesday in Squad 9 with 1307, finished the day in 14th place. As the tournament has reached the halfway mark, Timothy Andreason of Sweden mans the 35th and last place to advance with 1234 or an average of 205.67.

    Qualifying continues Thursday, July 12, with Squad 12, 13 and 14 scheduled for noon, 4 and 8 p.m. CEST.

    2012EBT11SanMarinoOpenBanner1_small.jpg The 8th Storm San Marino Open is the 11th stop of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the second out of four EBT "Gold" tournaments this season. The tournament will be held July 7-15 at 18-lane Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino and offers total prize fund of 60.200 Euro with 10.000 Euro going to the winner, 6.000 to the runner-up and 3.400 each to the third and fourth place finisher.

    The San Marino Open features a 40 feet Kegel lane conditioning pattern with 24.3ml volume oil total.

    The qualifying of the San Marino Open (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Saturday July 7 through Saturday, July 14 with the last qualifying squad 21 scheduled for 9 p.m. CEST. The qualifying winner will receive a 1.000 Euro bonus.

    Qualifying concludes with the one-game Desperado Squad scheduled to start at half past Midnight. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire tournament, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 48 players will advance to the finals on Sunday, July 15 - the top 35 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 7-8, the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 9-10, the top 4 from the squads conducted on July 11-12, and the top 3 from the Desperado Squad. The top 8 qualifiers receive two byes and qualifiers 9-16 get one.

    The other 32 players will bowl four games from scratch to cut to the top 16, who will meet qualifiers 9-16 in round two. Those 24 bowl another 4 games from scratch to cut to the top 8, who will join the top eight qualifiers in single-elimination match play with the two game total pinfall determining the winner.

    The highest seeded player bowls the lowest seeded, the second-highest seeded players bowls the second-lowest and so on. The field will be cut to 8, 4 then 2, who will bowl for the title and the 10.000 Euro top prize.

    2012EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2012 European Bowling Tour is made up of 21 events in 16 countries including two Platinum, four Gold, eight Silver and seven Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish in the event. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament such as the San Marino Open 2012 gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.

    Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 16 men and top 16 women who will compete in the sixth EBT Masters in Bratislava, Slovakia in Sept. 2013.
