Lynda Barnes leads Final Round 1 in 7th Columbia 300 Vienna Open

2009VOBarnesLohschmidGuerrero.jpg2009VOKamillaKjeldsen4.jpgLong-time Team USA member Lynda Barnes, United States, came out of the gates quickly Sunday morning at Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria to lead Final Round One in the 7th Columbia 300 Vienna Open.

The 2008 USBC Queens and Clash of Champions winner rolled games of 214, 233, 277, 213, 204 and 214 to lead the field of 56 players with 1403 pinfall total including 48 pins handicap and an average of 225.83.

Barnes and two-time world champion Clara Juliana Guerrero, staff members of Vienna Open name sponsor Columbia, came all the way from Texas to participate in the EBT Major event.

Tournament director Wolfgang Lohschmid lost one his two attractions as Guerrero missed the cut by just one pin to finish in 23rd place. L-R Lynda Barnes, Wolfgang Lohschmid and Clara Juliana Guerrero.

2009VOJimmyMortensen.jpg2009VOTimoAlho300.jpgTwo-time EBT Ranking and Masters champion, Kamilla Kjeldsen (above, right), Denmark, was 18 pins behind Barnes in second place with 1385. Her compatriot Jimmy Mortensen (left) was the best male bowler in Round 1 in third place with 1366.

Fourth place belonged to another Dane, Rikke Holm Rasmussen, with 1361. Next were Tobias Karlsson, Sweden, with 1355 and EBT Ranking champion and World Ranking Masters queen Britt Brøndsted in sixth with 1346.

Timo Alho (pictured right), set another highlight in game four when the Finn rolled 12 consecutive strikes for the tournament's third 300 game. Alho landed in 14th place with 1321. Leo Grundschober, Austria, beat out Guerrero for the 22nd an final spot to advance with 1292 or an average of 215.33.

Grundschober and 13th placed 13 Thomas Gross (1325) are the only bowlers from Austria among the remaining 30 players.

2009VOPatriciaLuoto.jpg2009VOTinaHulsch.jpgAmong those failing to advance was defending champion Patricia Luoto (left, 26th, 1281) and Doubles winner Tina Hulsch (right, 32nd, 1258), both Germany.

The top 22 from Round 1 will join the top 8 qualifiers in Round Two. Those 30 players will bowl another 6 games starting from scratch after which the field will be trimmed to the top 18 with the pinfall being carried forward into Round Three.

They will bowl another 6-game block and the top 4 with the highest 12-game total will advance to the stepladder finals.

The No. 4 seed meets the No. 3 in the opening match and the winner takes on the No. 2 seed for the right to bowl the top seed for the title, 100 ranking points and the 6.000 Euro top prize.

Bowlingdigital will provide live streaming from the final rounds on Sunday, Oct. 4 at Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria and from the stepladder finals starting at 5pm local time.

 

2009ViennaOpenLogo_small.jpg The 7th Columbia 300 Vienna Open is the 11th stop of the 2009 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Majors". The tournament will be held from Tuesday Sept. 29 through Sunday Oct. 4, 2009 at the renovated 32-lane Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria.

327 players from 27 countries compete for total prize money of 68.130 Euro - 57.900 € in Singles and 10.230 € in Doubles. The singles champion will receive the 6.000 Euro top prize while doubles winners Clara Juliana Guerrero Colombia, and Stuart Williams, England, split 1.600.
