Malaysia wins first gold medal at Abu Dhabi Asian Championships in Men Trios

    Silver and bronze for the host country, Korea's Choi Bok-Eum shoots his second perfecto

    2011AsCM3AaronKongMuhdNurAiman SyafiqRidhwan.jpg2011AsCM3UAE.jpgOvernight leader Aaron Kong, Muhd Nur Aiman and Syafiq Ridhwan (l-r) added 1894 on short oil to the 2095 3-game block on medium oil to win the first gold medal for Malaysia in Men Trios at the 21st Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships currently underway at Khalifa Bowling Center in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

    The threesome knocked down 3989 pins and averaged 221.61 over six games. Kong led the team with the field-best 1398 effort. Ridhwan, who had the highest 3-game block on Wednesday (727) totaled 1346 and Aiman added 1245.

    The silver and the bronze medal went to the host country. Sayed Ibrahim, Mahmood Al-Attar and Mohd.Al-Qubaisi (back row, r-l) maintained their second place with 1903 to earn the silver medal with 3914 total and an average of 217.44.

    Starting the day in 23rd place with sub-par 1734, Hussain Al-Suwaidi, Naif Oqab and Shaker Al-Hassan (front row, l-r) fired games of 708, 667 and 755, the highest game of the day, for 2130 (236.67 ave.) to rocket into third place and to grab the bronze medal with 3864 (214.67).

Singles champion Cho Young-Seon and Doubles champion Choi Yong-Kyu joined forces with Jang Dong-Chul but fell 55 pins short of the bronze medal with 3809.

    Their team mates Choi Bok-Eum, Hong Hae-Sol and Suh Sang-Cheon were eleven pins behind with 3798. Bok-Eum (pictured left), one of the best lefties in the world, set another highlight when he closed out his last game with twelve strikes for his second 300 game in this Championship. The first came in Singles, also on short oil.

    2010ABFT05YousifFalah.jpg2010AGAaronKong.jpgHong Kong's Wu Siu Hong (above right) maintained a slim 13-pin lead in All Events after 18 out of 24 games (combined results of Singles, Doubles, Trios and Team) with 4085 and an average of 226.94. Aaron Kong (left), Malaysia, used his 700 series today to leap from sixth to second place with 4072 (226.22). Yousif Falah (right), Bahrain, fell one spot to third place with 4035 (224.17).

    Places four and five belonged to Koreans Choi Yong-Kyu and Cho Young-Seon with 4016 and 2001, respectively. Choi Bok-Eum is just ten pins off the pace for the top 16 in 17th place with 3816 (212 avg.).

    The 107 men from 20 countries - Australia, Bahrain, Chinese, Taipei, Egypt, Hong, Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Kuwait, Macau, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Singapore, Thailand and UAE - will return Friday for the five-player Team event (first block on short oil, second block on medium oil).

    The top 16 in All Events (total 24 games) will advance to the Masters finals, which will conclude the 21st Asian Championships on Saturday and Sunday.
