Sue Abela and Justin Caruana Scicluna claimed their respective ladies' and men's divisions in the 2011 Tenovar World Cup Qualifier. After this success they will now be representing Malta in the 47th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup in Johannesburg, South Africa (Nov. 30 - Dec. 7, 2011).

The qualifying event, sponsored by TENOVAR Ltd. was played to a simple but reliable 24-game format over three 8-game sessions in as many days, the intension being that those bowlers toping the final standings would be those at the peak of their athletic ability.

Men's Division: Too close for comfort

2011BWCMaltaQJustinScicluna.jpgVeteran bowler John Balani may not be used to occupying the top spot in such events, but his day one lead over the very competitive male field was fully deserved. Balani shot a very consistent 1610 total for eight games, with a high of 226 in game three.

That put him just eighteen ahead of Dennis Mercieca in second (1592), Ray Falzon Reale in third (1569), while Justin Caruana Scicluna (pictured) lay fourth on 1560 pins. With only 50 pins separating the top four bowlers and sixteen games remaining, anything could happen.

John Balani was unable to keep his pace in day two, dropping down to fourth, swapping places with young Caruana Scicluna who took the top spot with 3148 from sixteen games.

There were more changes among the front runners with Danial Swift in second place on 3135, and Kenneth Arpa in third, tied with Balani on 3098, meaning it was still a 50-pin spread at the top.

Day three was every bit as interesting as the previous two, with Balani looking to make a comeback with a 3-game start of 710 (232-232-246). His game then waned somewhat, as Caruana Scicluna improved through the back four games, which included back-to-back efforts of 247 and 254, for an eventual grand total of 4786 (199.4 average) to make sure of first place.

John Balani held onto second place on 4735 pins (197.2), followed by Dennis Mercieca in third (4721, 196.7).

Ladies' Division: Yet another win for Sue Abela

2011BWCMaltaQSueAbela.jpgWhile Sue Abela (pictured) may have seemed a little out of sorts, possibly preoccupied with her son, Justin's performance in the men's event, she still managed to lead the ladies' event from day one, and claim her QubicaAMF World Cup place.

She topped the charts after eight games with a 1520 total (190 average), and retained her position through games 9-16. Sue led on 3068, ahead of Melissa Swift in second on 2962, and Tiziana Carannante on 2951 pins in third place.

There were no positional changes on day three, which ended with a tournament winning total of 4643 (193.4) for Sue Abela, 4506 for Melissa Swift, and 4500 for Tiziana Carannante.

The 47th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, between the 30th of November and 7th of December this year.
