England defends Girls Doubles title to start 25th European Youth Championships

    Hannah Frost, Bethany Hedley come from behind to win second consecutive gold medal

    2012EYCLogo.jpg Hannah Frost and Bethany Hedley of England captured their second consecutive gold medal in Girls Doubles at European Youth Championships after defeating top seeded Swedes Annie Thorell and Jenny Wegner in the title match, 447-425.

    The third-seeded English girls, who won the 2011 EYC Doubles title from No. 4 seed, topped No. 2 seed, Rikke N. Johansen and Pernille F. Nielsen of Denmark in the semifinal, 450-401.

    The Swedes edged the other Danish duo, Stine N. Johansen and Pernille W. Rasmussen, 429-419.

    The Swedes were the most consistent team in the playoffs with Thorell (215 and 213) and Wegner (214 and 212) just one pin apart in each match. However, England's Frost made the difference as she fired a 240 in the semifinal and 260 in the title match.

    England captured the first gold medal of the championships. Sweden took silver and the Danish teams shared the bronze medal.

    The 25th European Youth Championships will be held from March 31 through April 9, 2012 at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark.

    The EYC 2012 is divided in two divisions - boys and girls. Each team consists of maximum four male and four female players, who must not have reached the age of 19 before August 31st, 2012.

    The players compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Doubles, Teams, Singles, All Events (18 games) and Masters (top 24 in All Events, single-elimination, best-of-three games). Competition starts on Monday, April 2 with the Boys Doubles and ends on Easter Sunday, April 8, with the Boys and Girls Masters match play.
