Team USA's Tommy Jones takes commanding lead at World Singles Championships

    PBA star averages over 250 to lead Men's Qualifying Block 1 after 2/4 squads by 116 pins

    2012WSCTommyJones.jpg2012EBT04MatinPaulsson.jpgTommy Jones (pictured left), United States, averaged 251.83 to take a dominating lead in the men's qualifying at the World Singles Championships in Limassol, Cyprus. The 13-time PBA champion and PBA Player of the Year 2005-06 fired games of 257, 248, 235, 279, 259 and 233 to lead a field of 32 players with 1511 total.

    With two of four squads having completed the first block, Jones holds a huge 116-pin lead over Martin Paulsson (right) of Sweden, who finished day one qualifying in second place with 1395 and an average of 232.50. The World Champion in Doubles (2010) had a high game of 251 and a low game of 212.

Despite an opening game of 168, Mohammed Kamel of Kuwait was close behind in fourth place with 1338 (223.00). Rounding out the top 5 was Khaled Al-Dossari of Qatar with 1305 including a high game of 266 and a low game of 168.

    Jones' team mate, 13-time PBA champion and PBA Player of the Year 2007-08, Chris Barnes (right) sits in 12th place with 1213. Stavros Parasakis of Greece currently holds the 24th and last place to advance with 1155 and an average of 192.50.

    The players from Squad 3 and 4 will bowl their first qualifying block on Friday at 24-lane Galactica Bowling Center. All 72 men from 40 countries bowl 12 games of qualifying on the 41 feet WTBA Montreal oil pattern before the cut to the top 24 players, who advance to the finals Sept. 24 and 25.
