Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer and 2012 PBA50 Tour Rookie of the Year Amleto Monacelli (pictured left) averaged 231.6 to lead qualifying after the first round of the PBA50 Pasco County Suncoast Open benefiting Wounded Warriors Monday at Lane Glo Bowl in New Port Richey, Fla.

The Venezuela native had a 1,853 eight-game pinfall total with games of 188, 248, 233, 237, 219, 257, 248 and 223 in the opening tournament of the 2013 PBA50 Tour (formerly PBA Senior Tour) season.

"After the first game I had to make some adjustments and change to a different ball," said the 19-time PBA Tour and 2012 PBA Senior U.S. Open winner. "I went to a ball that hooked a little less and I had to throw a little bit harder and after that really had a consistent shot to the pocket for the rest of the block."

Monacelli holds a 41-pin lead over three-time PBA50 Tour titlist Harry Sullins (right) in second with a 1,812 pinfall total. Rounding out the top five are Hall of Famers Wayne Webb and Johnny Petraglia tied for third with a 1,809 pinfall, and Walter Ray Williams Jr. in fifth with 1,794.

One of the nation's most successful amateur woman bowlers, Lucy Sandelin (left) of Tampa, finished the first day of qualifying in sixth with a 1,793 pinfall total (224.1 average). Trying to become the first woman to win a PBA50 Tour tournament, she had games of 226, 258, 221, 201, 223, 203, 257 and 204.

"I'm mentally and physically strong and generally feel my game is as good as it has ever been," Sandelin said. "I'm going into the tournament feeling I have as good a chance as anyone so I'm hoping for the best."

Sandelin, a member of the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame and a 10-time Team USA member, became the first U.S. woman to win the AMF Bowling World Cup in 1976. She was the women's 1996 U.S. National Amateur Champion and was the United States Olympic Committee Athlete of the Year for bowling in 1992 and 1996.

Participating in his first PBA50 Tour event, Pete Weber (right) of St. Ann, Mo., sits in 16th place after the first round with 1,733 pinfall. Weber, who turned 50 in August 2012, won the Tournament of Champions on March 31 in Indianapolis for his tenth career PBA major title.

The top 40 players after Tuesday's second-round qualifying will advance to match play on Wednesday with Round of eight and final rounds getting underway at 5:30 p.m. ET.
