PBA Hall of Famer and 2012 PBA50 Rookie of the Year Amleto Monacelli (pictured left) continued his hot streak in qualifying by leading after the second round of the PBA50 Greater Birmingham Open presented by Ebonite Tuesday, marking the second time in the first three tournaments of the season he has led qualifying.

Monacelli, a 19-time winner on the PBA Tour and the winner of the Senior U.S. Open in his rookie season on the PBA50 Tour, led after the second round with a 3,775 pinfall total (235.9 average) and tops a field of 32 players who advanced to Wednesday's match play rounds.

Monacelli had a 1,881 eight-game pinfall with games of 178, 231, 220, 267, 259, 203, 255 and 268 in the second round which was good enough to edge first round leader Nick Morgan of Sacramento who finished with 3,772 for 16 games.

Monacelli also led qualifying in the season-opening Pasco County Suncoast Open where he finished fifth, and was fourth after last week's qualifying at the Sun Bowl in The Villages where he finished second after losing to winner Walter Ray Williams Jr. (right) 276-216 in the title match.

"I just need to tweak my adjustments in match play but other than that my physical and mental game is where it needs to be," Monacelli said. "Match play is different because you really have to understand the way lanes change because you're bowling under different conditions than you are in qualifying.

"For me, I really have to concentrate more on ball speed and getting the right angles to the pocket. You really have to be more careful about reading the lanes in match play."

Rounding out the top eight after qualifying who earned two-round byes for match play were Williams, Ocala, Fla., 3,684; PBA Hall of Famer and four-time PBA50 Tour Player of the Year Tom Baker (left), King, N.C., 3,677; three-time PBA50 Tour winner Hugh Miller (right), Seattle, 3,663; 2012 USBC Senior Masters winner Mike Edwards, Tulsa, 3,584; Robert Harvey Boise, Idaho, 3,581, and Jeff Schrum, Cherryville, N.C., 3,560.

Match play is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Central time Wednesday with championship rounds to begin at 7 p.m.
