D.J. Archer charges into first round lead in PBA Chameleon Championship

D.J. Archer (pictured left) of Friendswood, Texas, stumbled out of the gate, but righted himself quickly to charge into the first round lead in the PBA Chameleon Championship, the third of four animal pattern events in GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VI, Monday at South Point Bowling Center.
Archer, a 34-year-old, 12-year veteran who is still trying for his first PBA Tour title, rolled a 175 opening game, but rebounded quickly with a 275 followed by 264, 255, 234, 258 and 235 for a 1,696 seven-game total. Archer held a nine-pin lead over Ronnie Russell of Marion, Indiana, who was second with 1,687.
Dom Barrett (pictured left) of England was third with 1,674 and was followed by J.R. Raymond (right) of Bay City, Mich., in fourth place with 1,665 and Jason Couch of Clermont, Fla., in fifth place with 1,643.
Dave Wodka of Henderson, Nev., and Stuart Williams (below left) of England were tied for sixth place on 1,640.
Eight international players made the cut to the top 24. Daniel Fransson (below right) of Sweden took the final berth with 1,557 and an average of 222.43.
The top 24 advanced to a second seven-game qualifying round Monday night to decide the four players who will bowl for the Chameleon Championship title on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the new South Point Bowling Plaza.
"What's crazy is that in practice, I threw about 20 strikes in a row, but normally when that happens, the first game is always bad and I don't know why," Archer said.
"I said to myself, 'this isn't good,' but after that, it was just like it never happened and I bowled real well. I bowled 275 the second game and I just matched up with the right ball all day. When you get those things on the right page, you can throw a lot of strikes in this facility."
The Chameleon Championship was the third of four qualifying events that will determine the 24-player field for the PBA World Championship match play competition Wednesday and Thursday. The seven-game qualifying rounds in the Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon and Tuesday's Scorpion Championships will be combined to determine the World Championship finalists.
Russell nipped Dom Barrett of England for the PBA World Championship qualifying lead by 29 pins with a 21-game total of 4,904 pins. Barrett, who led World Champion qualifying a year ago on his way to winning that event for his first PBA major title, was another 34 pins ahead over Sean Rash (left) of Montgomery, Ill., who had one of two 300 games on the Chameleon pattern.
Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, was fourth with 4,833 and PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber (right) of St. Ann, Mo., rounds out the top 5 with 4,812.
World Series competition continues Tuesday with seven-game qualifying squads in the Scorpion Championship at 8 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
