The Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) sprang a surprise by naming an unexpected line-up and a new coach for the Asian Championships, which will be held in Hong Kong from July 4-11.
Youngsters Mohd Nur Aiman and Sin Li Jane received a big boost yesterday when they were named ahead of several elite bowlers for their first major international tournament.
Back-up bowler Nur Aiman (pictured left), who won the Penang Pesta International title last year, will join Alex Liew, Zulmazran Zulkifli, Adrian Ang, Daniel Lim and Aaron Kong in the team for the Asian meet.
Team manager Cheah Ban Cheng said that they selected Aiman ahead of elite bowler Mohd Noer Said to give the former a good exposure.
"Noer had not been bowling lately. Aiman is a left-handed bowler and with him in the ranks, we have a good balance in the team," he said.
Two years ago, the Malaysian men's team stole the show in the Asian meet by bagging two gold medals.
The women however finished empty-handed.
Li Jane (pictured right), who finished third in the Malaysian Open and did well during the Canon Cup in March, got the nod ahead of three elite bowlers – Choy Poh Lai, Sharon Koh and Zatil Iman Abdul Ghani.
"Li Jane showed that she could give the top bowlers a fight. Poh Lai will attend an IOC (International Olympic Committee) seminar just before the meet and we decided to send Sharon and Zatil only to the world youth meet," said Ban Cheng.
He added that the MTBC hired a new American consultant, Richard Shockley, last week to add depth to the men's team preparation for the World Championships in Bangkok from Aug 21-31.
"He will be with the men's team together with Holloway (Cheah, national chief coach) for the Asian meet. He will be able to gauge where our bowlers stand among the Asian peers," said Ban Cheng.
"He was the head of the Kegel Training Centre in the United States and has a wealth of experience dealing with professional bowlers."
Yesterday, the MTBC also named four boys (Aiman, Adrian, Aaron and Mohd Syafiq Ridhwan) and four girls (Zatil, Sharon, Esther and Zandra) for the World Youth Championships, which will be held in the US from July 18-23.
