Assembly sets new standards for bowling congresses
The 20th Asian Bowling Federation General Assembly set new standards for bowling congresses in the modern history of the sport. ABF President Sheikh Talal M. Al Sabah from Kuwait opened the meeting Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at the Royal Pacific Hotel in Kowloon, Hong Kong and closed the event after just one hour and 15 minutes.
ABF Hon. Life President, Vivien Fung, also the Chairman of the host federation, the Hong Kong Tenpin Bowling Congress, and WTBA President Kevin Dornberger stated that the meeting took place in a friendly and constructive atmosphere, especially considering that the election of the ABF Presidium was on the agenda.

While Dornberger followed the invitation to attend the General Assembly from the United States, FIQ President Jessica Phua from nearby Singapore missed the meeting. Also absent were powerhouses Malaysia and Indonesia.
The representatives of the ABF member federations had to elect a new presidium for a four-year term consisting of the ABF President, four Vice Presidents, five Executive Committee Members, and the Hon. Secretary General/Treasurer and the Hon. Auditor.
It was absolutely no surprise that the assembly members decided to re-elect Sheikh Talal M. Al Sabah (left) as President of the Asian Bowling Federation for the next four years. Among the new vice presidents are two familiar faces in international bowling.
Dr. Danny Santos, Philippines, a former FIQ General Secretary and tournament director of several international championships, was elected as VP for the Far East Region.
Elected as VP of the Oceania Region was Andrew Frawley. The Aussie, who became a USBC Silver Level Coach in the elite seminar in February, who finished fourth in the PBA World Championships one week later and who runs a highly successful bowling center in Sydney since two months surprisingly found himself wearing yet another hat.

Good news for UAE bowler Sayed Ibrahim (pictured left). The General Assembly even found the time to solve an issue a.k.a. "Scandal over 300 Perfect Game Award".
The issue began more than two years ago when Ibrahim rolled a 300-game in the 2006 Malaysian Open. Instead of the cash award of 50,000 Malaysian Ringgit (approx. US$ 13,500 at that time) Ibrahim was awarded with a Canon printer by the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress.
After an almost "never ending story" in which the ABF suspended all international Malaysian tournaments and the MTBC has finally paid a RM 50,000 fine for "various breaches of WTBA tournament sanctioning rules, regulations and protocols" to the ABF, the General Assembly has voted to give this money to the bowler.

The 20th ABF General Assembly is held in conjunction with the 20th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships, which will be staged from July 4-12 at Hong Kong Bowling City. The championships will start on Friday with the Opening Ceremony, a Welcome Reception and the Official Practice. Competition commences on Saturday, July 5th, with the men's and women's Singles.
