Brazeau leads after two rounds at 2009 USBC Senior Masters

2008PBAS09BrianBrazeau.jpgBrian Brazeau (pictured left) of Ocala, Fla., has been a model of consistency at the 2009 United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters and is the tournament leader through two days of competition at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas, Nev.

The 52-year-old right-hander was fourth overall after shooting 1,152 in Monday's opening round and added 1,164 on Tuesday for a 2,316 total for 10 games. Tom Carter of Rockford, Ill., is second with 2,257, while first-round leader Tom Baker of King, N.C., shot 972 on Tuesday and is third with 2,184. Ziggy Czaja of Fontana, Calif., who owns the event's only perfect game, is fourth with 2,175.

"I caught a really good look on the high side today and had two big games, which is where most of my pins came from," said Brazeau, who posted games of 199, 258, 279, 189 and 239 on Tuesday morning. "I didn't play the lanes too much differently than yesterday. I used the same ball and just moved my feet and target."

Brazeau has struggled early on this season, but is coming off of a momentum-changing 13th place finish at the 2009 Professional Bowlers Association Senior U.S. Open. He also attributes much of his recent success to the variety of challenging conditions he has seen recently in Las Vegas while competing at the USBC Open Championships, its satellite events and the Senior U.S. Open.

"I've been struggling a little bit this year, but I bowled well last week, and it's carried over," Brazeau said. "I took a few days off to relax, but I had a good practice session, and things are starting to click. I just feel like I'm more prepared, and that's been the difference. I also like when the lanes are a little tougher because it forces you to focus more, and you really have to grind it out. That's what you see at the major events."

With match play still five games away, Brazeau will get prepared for his final block of qualifying, but with a 294-pin lead on 63rd place, the final spot for match play, he'll likely use some of Wednesday's third round to try a few other things.

"I just want to be prepared," said Brazeau, who owns one PBA Senior Tour title. "I'll be getting my equipment ready for tomorrow night, but I also plan to drill a couple of balls to give myself different options. I just don't want to get locked into one thing. You never want to look too far ahead, that's for sure, but it's nice that I'm in a position where I can start thinking about match play."

2009PBAS07KennyParks_small.jpgAll 338 Senior Masters competitors will bowl 15 qualifying games over three days, before the field is cut to the top 63, who then will join defending champion Kenny Parks (right) in the double-elimination match-play bracket.

    Qualifying continues Wednesday with squads at 8 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Pacific.

Match play will begin Thursday morning, and all matches will consist of three games, with total pins determining the winners. The tournament champion will take home a $17,000 top prize.
