Professional bowlers set the tone on Wednesday at AMF Australian Masters

    Four stars of the Professional Women's Bowling Association Tour, two from the U.S. and two from Australia, set the tone on Wednesday in the AMF Australian Masters currently underway at AMF Bowling Rooty Hill RSL in Sydney, Australia.

    20-time PWBA champion Wendy Macpherson, 2-time PWBA champion and Team USA standout Lynda Barnes, both United States, and 16-time PWBA champions Carol Gianotti and Dana Miller-Mackie completed two three-game series to position themselves on the leaderboard of the $110,000 AUD tournament.

    The AMF Australian Masters 2010 is incorporated in the 49th Australian Adult National Championship. This year the event, which has record entries, is sponsored by AMF with first prize for men of $25,000 and women $15,000 AUD.

Rebecca Voukolos (right), Northern Territory, remained in first place with 1467 (244.50).

    Raniia Nugroho, New South Wales, slipped one place to third with 1371. Gianotti, the 1998 PWBA player of the Year and two-time Australian Women's Sports Star of the Year, leaped into fourth place with 1358 featuring a pair of 679 series.

    Barnes, who has won one of her two WIBC Queens titles after the PWBA Tour ceased operations in the fall of 2003, currently sits in ninth place with 1305 including a high series of 709. WIBC Hall of Famer Miller-Mackie used series of 639 and 602 to overtake 16th place with 1241.

    There were no changes atop the men's leaderboard on Wednesday. Chris Kirwin (rigth), Northern Territory, continued to lead with 1492, a 248.7 average, including high series of 773 and 719.

    Jason Doust, Australian Capital Territory, remained in second place with 1485 and was followed by Robert Townsend, ACT, in third place with 1472 and Michael Little, NSW, in fourth place with 1449. The cut for the top 40 men is currently 1109 or an average of 184.83.

    The Australian Championships are in their third and last week. The first week centered on the restricted or lower average bowlers. The second week was dedicated to the seniors and the final week is focused on the open grade bowlers.

    Bowlers qualify for the event over 6 games which must be taken from either a singles, doubles or mixed doubles block of 3 games. The bowlers' best two attempts make up their qualifying score.

    A total of 40 men and 40 women will advance to the finals. The defending champion and the State/Territory Masters winners cannot be eliminated from qualifying. The top 4 in each division will receive two byes to Round 3 while bowlers seeded positions 5 through 16 will receive one bye to Round 2. Bowlers filling qualifying positions 17 through 40 will compete in Round 1. No pinfall will carry over in any of the final rounds.

    In the event of a tie for fourth, 16th or 40th qualifying positions, a single game will be played to break the tie. Any subsequent tie will require a 10th frame playoff until the tie is broken.

    Bowlers 17 through 40 will bowl 6 games scratch to cut to the top 12 bowlers who will join bowlers seeded positions 5 through 16 in Round 2. These 24 bowlers will then play 6 games scratch. The top 12 bowlers on total pinfall meet the top 4 qualifiers in Round 3.

    These 16 bowlers will then play 6 games scratch. The top 8 bowlers on total pinfall will determine the champion in single-elimination best-of-five games match play. The field will be cut to 4 and then two players who will bowl for the 2010 AMF Australian Masters titles and the $25,000 and $15,000 AUD top prizes, respectively. The winners will also get free entry into the 2011 event.
