Mohr's absence from USBC Senior Masters gives glimmer of hope to short list of PBA Senior Player of the Year contenders

After a phenomenal first half of the 2011 PBA Senior Tour season, Alaskan Ron Mohr (pictured left) holds a commanding lead in the Senior Player of the Year points race with five tournaments remaining on the 2011 Senior Tour schedule.
But Mohr's absence from the upcoming USBC Senior Masters will provide an opportunity for a couple of challengers, most notably PBA Hall of Famer and 2010 Senior Rookie of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr. (right), to pick up some valuable ground as Mohr will miss the event to attend a family wedding.
Mohr leads the Player of the Year rankings with 70 points, followed by Williams with 40, as the season resumes July 31-Aug. 5 after a month-long break with the Senior Masters. Reigning Senior Player of the Year and Senior Masters defending champion Wayne Webb (below left) hosts the Senior Masters for the first time at his center in Columbus, Ohio.
With 24 points awarded for a major win, Williams can get right back into contention. The Masters format is a favorite of Williams' having won the USBC Masters twice and finished second to Webb in last year's Senior Masters.
Mohr's career season includes wins in three of the last four tournaments including the Senior U.S. Open, the Tour's other major tournament. He defeated Williams, 246-189, in the title match for his first major title.
Mohr, the 2009 Senior Player of the Year with six career Senior Tour titles, has competed in four consecutive title matches. A loss to Williams in the title match of the Mark Roth Allentown Open is all that has kept him from winning four consecutive tournaments. He also has third and fourth-place finishes to go along with his three wins and runner-up finish through the season's first six tournaments.
In addition to Williams' win in the Mark Roth Allentown Open and second-place finish in the Senior U.S. Open, he has other top finishes of second in the Sun Bowl In The Villages and third in the Senior Don Carter Open.
Harry Sullins (right), who won his second career Senior Tour title in the Senior Sun Bowl In The Villages, is a distant third with 28 points but while 42 points behind, a Senior Masters win can make the 2009 Senior PBA World Championship winner a contender as well.
In addition to 24 points awarded for a major win, 12 points are awarded for second, eight for third and four for fourth in Senior Player of the Year rankings.
