2016TeenMastersLogoRed.jpgDawson Maier of Hampton, Va., and Adrianna Stacy of Sebring, Fla., both advanced from fifth to first after the second round of qualifying in the Teen Masters Championships at Sawgrass Lanes in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Tuesday.

Maier, 17, rolled games of 233, 234, 216, 197, 236 and 219 Tuesday to finish the second round with a 12-game total of 2,645 pins and a 12-pin lead over Andy Campbell of Fort Thomas, Ky. Campbell was tied for 47th after the first six games.

Pictured above is 2015 Teen Masters champion Brigitte Jacobs.

Stacy, also 17, had games of 268, 204, 157, 205, 226 and 147 to finish her second round with 2,397 pins – a 199.75 average – but it was enough to hold off a charge by Madison Janack of Myrtle Beach, S.C., who made the move from 15th place to second. Janack was 34 pins behind Stacy.

Within the Teen Masters is a sub-contest for bowlers ages 14 and under. Tyler Michel of Chesapeake, Va., led the boys’ group in 54th place overall with 2,256 pins while Mabel Cummins of Elburn, Ill., was in eighth place among the girls with 2,275 pins.

The Teen Masters provides as an elite challenge for high school-age boys and girls including competition on Professional Bowlers Association-caliber short- and long-oil lane conditions, and restrictions on bowling balls that require emphasis on skill vs. technology.

All players bowled six qualifying games on a 38-foot lane condition Monday, a 30-foot oiling pattern on Tuesday and a third six-game qualifying round Wednesday with the long-oil pattern on one lane and the short-oil pattern on the adjoining lane.

After 18 games, the top 25 percent of the field of 211 boys and 101 girls will advance to the final four additional six-game rounds Thursday and Friday. Based on 42 game pinfall totals, the winner in each division will receive a $6,000 scholarship.

The Teen Masters is being covered live, exclusively on PBA’s Xtra Frame online video streaming service.
