Grabrijan, Aksular conclude 2015 MCC with victory in Masters

The 18th Mediterranean Challenge Cup 2015 concluded Saturday with the men’s and women’s Masters competition at Bowling Mega Place in Chania, Crete, Greece. The top 8 players in All-Events advanced to single-elimination match play and all matches consisted of two games, with total pins determining the winners.

Anže Grabrijan of Slovenia defeated Malta’s Mark Spiteri, 420-391, to claim the men’s title. Gulhan Aksular of Turkey came back from a 32-pin deficit with big 246 second game to beat Italian Giada Di Martino, 415-395.

Turkey led the final medal table with two gold, one silver and three bronze medals. The complete medal table is tabulated below.

Grabrijan added another two silver medals in Singles and All-Events and two bronze medals in Mixed Doubles and the four-player Mixed Teams. Spaniard Francisco Rodriguez topped Grabrijan by 120 pins in Singles and just three pins in All-Events to capture two gold medals for Spain.

Adile Sevgi Michajlow and Habib Dogan captured the second gold medal for Turkey by winning in Mixed Doubles. Michajlow and Aksular, who started the five-day competition with silver and bronze in Singles, teamed to win another silver medal in Doubles. Michajlow also got a bronze medal in All-Events.

Ivana Krajačić of Croatia took the title in Singles, while Giada Di Martino and Annalisa Balzano captured the gold medal in Doubles. Record MCC gold medalist Sue Abela led the 22 women in All-Events and joined forces with Tiziana Carannante, Mark Spiteri and Maurizio Anastasi to win the coveted team title.

The lone gold medal for the host country Greece came in men’s doubles won by Stavros Parasakis and Ioannis Stathatos.

The 18th Mediterranean Challenge Cup 2015 was held from April 21-26, 2013 at Bowling Mega Place Chania, Crete, Greece. Each country was represented by a team of up to two female and two male competitors.

46 players, 24 men and 22 women, from 12 countries – Croatia, Cyprus, Gibraltar (men only),
Israel, Italy, Malta, San Marino, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and host Greece – competed in separate divisions for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, All Events and Masters as well as in Mixed Doubles and a Mixed Team event.

The 19th Mediterranean Challenge Cup will be held April 11-17, 2016 in Bologna, Italy.
