Korea’s Jung Dawun wins WWC Masters gold

Jung Dawun of Korea outlasted Liz Johnson, United States, 256-183, in the title match to conclude the 2015 Women’s World Championships in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, with victory in the Masters competition Sunday at Khalifa International Bowling Center.

Johnson, who averaged 252 in match play to easily take the No. 1 seed for the medal, rolled just three strikes in the title match to fall behind early. Dawun started with a double and reeled off six consecutive strikes from the fifth frame to put the match away well before the final frame, 256-183.

Johnson, who posted the third 300 game of this Championships in the title match of the Team event to help Team USA win the gold medal, dominated the Masters competition and became the first woman in history of the World Championships to roll multiple 300 games in the same event when she started the seven-game match play round with another perfect game.

In a low-scoring affair, Dawun and Eunhee both rolled clean game, and the only double by Dawun in the third and fourth frame made the difference. Dawun advanced to the gold medal match with a 208-193 win.

McEwan, who rolled the fifth 300 game of the Championship and the 16th in history in game three of the match play round. She started with a four-bagger to take a 20 pin lead as Johnson came out of the gates with strike-spare-double.

Both player went spare-strike in the next two frames and Johnson added three more strike while McEwan was unable to strike until the fill ball. John advance to the title match with 238-213.

Johnson received the silver medal and Eunhee and McEwan shared bronze. In defeating Johnson in the gold medal match, Korea led the medal tally (scroll down) after six events with 3 gold, two silver and three bronze. USA was second with two medals of each color, and Singapore third with 1-2-3. Denmark, England and Germany each took home one bronze medal.

The 2015 Women’s World Championships was held from December 5-14 at Khalifa International Bowling Center in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

147 players from 30 countries competed for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Trios, five-player Teams, All-Events and Masters in the seven-day competition.

In accordance with the WTBA Playing Rules, the 2015 Women’s World Championships were contested on two lane conditioning pattern, the 36 ft. Los Angeles pattern and the 43 ft. Tokyo pattern.

The Championships ended on sad note as it was the very TV show for USBC Communication manager Lucas Wiseman, who will be leaving the USBC Headquarters in Arlington, Texas, to pursue other opportunities in Indianapolis.
