Lalisang, Cheah claim Open Masters titles at 42nd Hong Kong International

2016HKGOpenMichaelMak.jpgRyan Lalisang of Indonesia and Esther Cheah of Malaysia claimed the men’s and women’s Open Masters titles in the 42nd Hong Kong International Open Tenpin Bowling Championships Sunday at South China Athletic Association Bowling Center in Hong Kong, China.

2016HKGOpenRyanLalisang.jpgThe tournament drew 89 men and 59 women. 39 men and 30 women advanced from the qualifying. In two eight-game rounds, the field was trimmed to six men and six women, who advanced to the stepladder finals.

In the men’s championship match, top-seeded Lalisang (left) denied Michael Mak‘s (right) bid for his third consecutive international title, defeating the Chinese Taipei Open and Asian Bowling Federation Tour Chinese Taipei leg winner from Hong Kong, 207-167.

Lalisang earned the top prize of $55,000 Hong Kong Dollars, while Mak took home $22,000 for second place.

Mak, seeded third, ousted No. 2 Jassem Al-Saqer of Kuwait (211) and compatriot Yeung Wicky, 245-211-195, in the semi-final round. Yeung sidelined Hardy Rachmadian of Indonesia and Johnathan Chan, Malaysia, in the opening round, 204-179-178.

Al-Saqer received $14,000 for third place, Yeung got $7,000 for fourth, while Rachmadian and Chan garnered $5,000 and $4,000 for fifth and sixth place, respectively.

2016HKGOpenFinalistsWomenTop3.jpgIn the women’s finals, second-seeded Cheah (center) defeated defending champion Lim So Hyun of Korea, 209-204 and 210-179, to seal the victory. The top-seeded Lim (left) had to be defeated twice to win the title. Cheah earned the women’s top prize of $26,000 Hong Kong Dollars, while Lim was consoled with $14,000 for second place.

Cheah advanced to the title match by defeating two Indonesian, No. 4 Tannya Roumimper (right) and No. 3 Nadia Pramanik in the semi-final match, 246-189-173. Roumimper won a close opening shoot-out match against Han Kyeo Rae of Korea and Sharon Limansantoso, Indonesia, 224-215-212.

Roumimper took home $7,000 for third place, Pramanik got $3,500 for fourth, Han received $2,500 for fifth place and Limansantoso garnered $1,800 for sixth place.

The top 16 Asian men and top 16 Asian women qualified for the fourth leg of the 2016 Asian Bowling Federation Tour to be held Monday, July 18, once again at SCAA Bowling Center in Hong Kong, China.
