Liz Johnson delivers in final frame at Women’s Championships

United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, New York, delivered two strikes in her final frame May 28 to secure the lead in Diamond Singles at the 2016 USBC Women’s Championships with a 757 series.

The five-time Women’s Championships titlist started singles at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas with games of 212 and 278 before finding herself in must-strike territory after a spare conversion in the fourth frame. Johnson fired seven consecutive strikes starting in the fifth frame to finish with a 267 game.

Team USA’s Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, had taken the lead earlier in the day with 749.

“I guess I had to be patient,” said Johnson, who added 703 in team and 619 in doubles for an all-events total of 2,079, placing her fourth overall.

“In doubles, I really didn’t miss the pocket, but the carry wasn’t great. I had the right ball in my hand, and once I got to move into a more comfortable spot, the strikes seemed to come. It was just a matter of making good shots and staying down, and everything fell into place the last couple of games.”

New leaders emerge in the Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire and Topaz divisions

The 2016 Women’s Championships saw new leaders in the Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire and Topaz divisions this week at the South Point Bowling Plaza.

Daphne Williams (pictured above) of Mount Vernon, New York, moved into the lead in Ruby Singles with games of 226, 236 and 216 for a 678 series June 1. Billie Roberts of Rockford, Illinois, previously held the lead with 673.

Williams also took the Ruby All-Events lead with a nine-game total of 1,806, but her time at the top of the standings only lasted until June 3 as Rhonda Ybarra of Chicago finished her 2016 tournament with a 1,834 total.

Ybarra (pictured above) rolled sets of 666 in doubles, 621 in singles and 547 in team to reach her leading total, and her performance in doubles helped her and Clara Lyall of Chicago move into the top spot in Emerald Doubles with 1,187. Lyall added 521 to the effort as the pair surpassed Kitty Cody of Citrus Heights, California, and Chris Mahana of Eagle, Idaho, who previously held the lead with 1,167.

The Sapphire Team lead changed hands June 2 as Wyoming Wild Bunch of Thermopolis, Wyoming, took the lead with 1,902. McGuire Construction of Ebson, Kansas, had led with 1,890.

Ella Parker‘s 609 series led the way for Wyoming Wild Bunch, which had games of 623, 632 and 647. Parker was joined by Jessica Slagle (582), Shawna Baumeister (430) and Hope Gebes (281).

Selena Fabricius of Burlington, Wyoming, and Debbie Smith of Emmett, Idaho, also made their way to the top of the standings June 2 as they edged into the Topaz Doubles lead. Fabricius rolled a 476 series, and Smith added 444 to get the pair to 920 to pass Judy Moreman and Rosalinda Walker of Danville, Illinois, who had held the lead with 914.

A look ahead

Linda Prattini of Metairie, Louisiana, will celebrate her 50th consecutive USBC Women’s Championships appearance this week at the South Point Bowling Plaza.

Prattini is the founder of the famed Zodiacs of New Orleans team, which has earned the distinction of the “World’s Best-Dressed Bowling Team.” The team is celebrating its 48th year of arriving at the event in handmade costumes.

Prattini, who began her tournament career at the 1967 event in Rochester, New York, will hit the lanes June 5 at 10 p.m. Eastern.
