New leaders emerge in Ruby, Sapphire, Topaz divisions

The Ruby and Sapphire divisions saw new team leaders emerge this week at the 2016 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships taking place at the South Point Bowling Plaza.

In the Ruby Division, three of the four members of Road Trip of Naperville, Illinois, recently found success at the USBC Open Championships in Reno, Nevada, and continued their hot streak on the championship lanes in Las Vegas as they moved into the lead with 2,266.

After moving into the Classified Team lead at Reno’s National Bowling Stadium, Susan Schlink, Jan Schmidt and Belle Garcia teamed with Mari Gallegos to roll games of 669, 785 and 812 at the Bowling Plaza to surpass VA Wildcards of Stafford, Virginia, which led with 2,215.

Schmidt’s 605 led the effort and was followed by Schlink (574), Gallegos (560) and Garcia (527).

McGuire Construction of Esbon, Kansas, moved into the top spot in the Sapphire standings after posting games of 665, 665 and 560 for a 1,890 total. St. Croix River Rollers of Stillwater, Minnesota, previously led with 1,835.

Debra McGuire paced McGuire Construction with 514, and she was joined in Las Vegas by Kim Davis (487), Kim Grams (467) and Jeneane Nelssen (422).

Ruby Team features four-player teams with combined entering averages of 650-724, while Sapphire Team is for teams with combined entering averages of 574 and below.

Sapphire Doubles, Singles has new leaders

Marge Vieira of Ripon, California, and Suzanne Ruiz of Delhi, California, teamed to take the Sapphire Doubles lead at the 2016 USBC Women’s Championships, while Carolyn Fleming of Trenton, Illinois, moved into the Sapphire Singles lead.

Ruiz led the doubles effort with a 560 series, while Vieira added 525 to help the pair get to 1,085 and pass the 1,073 total posted by Janet and Arianne Sward of Grasston, Minnesota.

Fleming used the momentum of a big second game to secure the lead with 619. She rolled games of 191, 258 and 170 to move ahead of Judy Mason of Greer, South Carolina, who had 591.

Sapphire Doubles includes bowlers with combined entering averages of 290-319, while Sapphire Singles has bowlers with entering averages of 145-159.

Michigan bowler takes lead in two events

Sue Browne of Garden City, Michigan, leads Topaz Singles and Topaz All-Events at the 2016 USBC Women’s Championships.

Browne rolled games of 154, 177 and 187 to take the lead in singles with 518, and her nine-game total, which included 513 in team and 471 in doubles, pushed her into the all-events lead with 1,502.

Topaz Singles and All-Events features bowlers with entering averages of 129 and below.

A look ahead

The final live stream from the 2016 USBC Women’s Championships will take place May 28 at 11 a.m. Eastern as defending Diamond Singles champion Brooke Bower of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, puts her title on the line at the Bowling Plaza.

Bower captured the title in 2015 with games of 257, 257 and 267 for a 781 series, the third highest singles total in tournament history. Her doubles and singles competition will be broadcast live on BOWL.com’s BowlTV.
