Paco Rodriguez cracks top 5 at Brunswick Madrid Challenge

2016EBT08PabloBarriopedro3.jpg2016EBT08IldemaroRuiz2.jpgTournament organizer Paco Rodriguez of Spain had a perma-grin on his face Tuesday evening at Bowling Chamartín in Madrid, Spain, after averaging 240 in squad 11 to move into fourth place in the qualifying of the 4th Brunswick Madrid Challenge. His compatriot Pablo Barriopedro (left) continued to lead the field of 85 players from 12 countries with 1479 (246.50).

Rodriguez (above), who registered games of 267, 227, 222, 245, 236 and 243 for 1440 six-game series, remained unchallenged in squad 12 and is automatically qualified for the finals by virtue of finishing in the top 5 of a separate leaderboard of squads 9 to 12 on Monday and Tuesday.

2016EBT08LucasLegnani.jpg2016EBT08LuisBriceno.jpgJoining Rodriguez on the list are second place Ildemaro Ruiz Jr. (above right) of Venezuela with 1449, including a 300 game; Lucas Legnani (left) of Argentina, who is third with 1463 and Luis Briceño (right) of Spain who sits in fifth place with 1432, including the tournament’s first 300 game.

Rounding out the top 5 of squads 9-12 was Wesley Gorter, Netherlands, who was next to Rodriguez in squad 11 with 1413 to leap into sixth place overall. Gorter had games of 258, 197, 236, 278, 238 and 206.

Those five players will be automatically qualified for the finals if they don’t finish among the top 38 in the overall qualifying standings. If any of the five will finish in the top 38, the automatic spot goes to the next qualifier in order.

2016EBT08GiannisStathatos.jpg2016EBT08JulioGonzalezCantero.jpgGiannis Stathatos (left) of Greece posted the seventh series over 1100 in squad 12 to leap into seventh place. Stathatos had games of 268, 247, 211, 183, 235 and 267 for 1411, an average of 235.17.

Places 8 to 10 belonged to Spanish bowlers Julio Gonzalez (1398), Raul Jimenez (1391) and Ruben Orche (1386).

Birgit Pöppler (below right) of Germany is the best woman in the field in 19th place with 1312 total, including eight pins bonus each game, an equality handicap provided to women in all EBT events.

2016USBCQueensBirgitPoppler4.jpgWith 12 of 26 qualifying squads completed, Carlos DeCarvajal of Spain holds the 38th and last place to advance directly to Sunday’s finals with 1210 and an average of 201.67. Qualifying continues on Wednesday, July 6, with squad 14 scheduled to start at 9 p.m. Central European Summer Time. Squad 13 has been canceled.

2016BrunswickMadridChallengeLogo_small.jpgThe IV Brunswick Madrid Challenge is the 8th stop of the 2016 European Bowling Tour season and the third out of four EBT “Silver” tournaments this season. The tournament will be held from July 2-10 at 20-lane Bowling Chamartín in Madrid, Spain.

Players will compete for total prize money of 40.250 Euro with 6.000 Euro going to the winner, 3.000 to the runner-up and 2.000 to the third place finisher. Last-to-cash payout (50th place) is 300 Euro.

Qualifying got underway on Saturday, July 2, and runs through Saturday, July 9, with the last squad 26 to start at 9 p.m. Central European Summer Time (CEST). Qualifying wraps up with the Desperado Squad slated for half past Midnight. The qualifying winner earns a 750 Euro bonus.

Women receive 8 pins handicap each game (maximum score is 300), a standard on the European Bowling Tour. The top two women in qualifying (before Desperado Squad) earn 750 and 500 Euro, respectively.

Total 50 players qualify for the finals on Sunday, July 10 – the top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings, the top three players from the combined standings of squads 1-8 and the top 5 of squads 9-12 who were not among the top 38, and the top four players of the Desperado Squad. The top 10 qualifiers receive two byes while qualifiers 11-20 get a first-round bye.

The first three rounds of the finals feature four games from scratch, which trim the field to 30, 20 and then 10 players who advance to another four-game round with the Round 3 total being carried forward.

The top 3 with the highest eight-game total advance to the stepladder finals. The No. 2 and 3 seeds open the action with a one-game shootout match. The winner goes against the No. 1 seed for the title and 6.000 Euro first prize.

2016EBTLogo_small.jpgThe 2016 European Bowling Tour currently consists of 16 tournaments in 11 countries featuring three “Platinum” events, three “Gold”, four “Silver” and six “Satellite” events. All tournaments together offer total prize fund of roughly 850.000 Euro.

The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 12 men and top 12 women, who will be eligible to compete in the 10th EBT Masters May 29, 2017, at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark.

2016 Brunswick Madrid Challenge – Standings after Qualifying Squad 12/26

Top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings, top three players from the combined standings of squads 1-8 (places 39-41) and top 5 of squads 9-12 (places 42-46) who are not among the top 38, and top four players of the Desperado Squad (places 47-50) will advance to Sunday’s finals.
