Zoghaib averaged 199.56 for 18 qualifying games in A squad to earn the top seed for the playoffs.
In a low-scoring opening match between the No. 2 of B squad, Alex Martinho, who bowled in his first World Cup qualifier, and the No. 2 of A squad, Mauro Sato, the rookie advanced by 171-155.
Martinho carried the momentum into the semifinal match, defeating B squad leader Mauro Sato, 190-176. In the title match, Zoghaib flew past Martinho, 257-167, to earn his third berth into the World Cup.
The 31-year-old event coordinator represented Brazil at the 2008 World Cup in Hermosillo, Mexico, and at the 50th anniversary edition in Wroclaw, Poland, in 2015.
On the women’s side, Rodrigues, a 28-year-old student, who has represented Brazil at the 2009 World Cup in Melaka, Malaysia, averaged 179.06 for 18 games in the women’s qualifying (one squad only) to earn the No. 2 seed for the playoffs.
No. 3 seed Inês Yamaguti automatically advanced to the semi-final as No. 4 seed Mariana Paschoal had to withdraw due to injury. In a one-sided semi-final match, Rodrigues easily sidelined Yamaguti, 217-106, for the right to bowl tournament leader Stephanie Martins for the title.
Rodrigues had to defeat the 2015 Brazil Bowling Cup winner twice to earn the ticket to Shanghai and that was exactly what she did. Rodriguez won the first game, 214-190, and cruised to victory with a 212-164 in the deciding game.
