UAE takes gold and bronze in Doubles at GCC Championships

2016GCCDoublesKhamisAlShamsiMahmoodAlAttarKhamis Al Shamsi and Mahmood Al Attar captured the first gold medal in the 14th Gulf Cooperation Council Men’s Bowling Championships for the host country United Arab Emirates as the duo triumphed in doubles Monday at the International Bowling Center in Dubai.

The duo averaged over 217 for six games to lead the 18 doubles from six countries with 2612 total, including games of 449, 464, 471, 411, 407 and 410. Al Attar (right) toppled 1319 pins and Al Shamsi (left) contributed 1293.

Trailing the Emiratis by 86 pins to take the silver medal were Mohammed Al-Muraikhi and Yousef Al-Jaber of Qatar, who totaled 2526 pins, an average of 210.50, including the highest game of the event with 483.

The bronze medal also went to the UAE as singles silver medalist, Naif Oqab, teamed with Shaker Al Hassan for 2515 (209.58). Oqab led all 36 bowlers with 1360, the highest individual six-game series of this Championships so far, to take a comfortable 115-pin lead in all-events (total pinfall in singles, doubles, trios and team event).

With 12 of 24 games in the books, Oqab leads with 2714 and an average of 226.17. Singles champion Yousif Falah of Bahrain slipped to second place with 2599 (216.58) with doubles champion Khamis Al Shamsi in third place on 2553 (212.75).

Just outside the top 3 in fourth to sixth place were Qataris Ghanim Aboujassom (2547), Hazeem Al Muraikhi (2533) and Jassim Al Muraikhi (2530).

Action shifts to the trios event on Tuesday.

2016GCCLogoThe 14th Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Men’s Bowling Championship will be held from September 2-9 at the International Bowling Center in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The Championship drew 36 players, six players each from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the host country United Arab Emirates, who will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in six disciplines, singles, doubles, trios, team, all-events and masters.

The GCC Championships will be televised live on Dubai Sport Channel 3:
Tuesday, Sept. 6 – Trios from 2pm GST (Gulf Standard Time)
Wednesday, Sept. 7 – Team from 2pm GST
Thursday, Sept. 8 – Masters from 4pm GST
