Zodaics’ Prattini celebrates 50th USBC Women’s Championships appearance

The founder of the famed Zodiacs of New Orleans, Linda Prattini, made her 50th consecutive United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships appearance June 5.

The 74-year-old right-hander began her tournament career at the 1967 event in Rochester, New York, and was awarded a plaque, chevron and pendant at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas this week to commemorate her achievement.

Prattini introduced the Zodiacs at the 1969 USBC Women’s Championships in San Diego as a rebellion against the tournament’s dress code. The team arrived in full-length formal dresses that would break away at the knees once they were on the lanes.

Since that trip to University Lanes, the Zodiacs have returned to the event each year, debuting a new handmade costume that often reflects characteristics of the host city. The group, which featured three teams in 2016, is known as the “World’s Best-Dressed Bowling Team.”

“There are many, many reasons why I’ve enjoyed this 50-year journey,” said Prattini, who rolled sets of 428 in team, 421 in singles and 350 in doubles for a 1,199 all-events total in her 50th appearance.

“Yes, the publicity is fun, and designing the costumes is my little niche into the fashion design world, since I wanted to be a clothes designer. But, I love the sport and my team. I have bad feet, bone-on-bone knees and spinal stenosis, so you need to have the desire to do this. I will keep doing this as long as I can, working towards the goal of celebrating the Zodiacs’ 50th consecutive year in 2018.”

Sisters take Sapphire Doubles lead at South Point Bowling Plaza

Sisters Pua Edayan of Waimanalo, Hawaii, and Tatiana Montez of Kapolei, Hawaii, used a strong final game to push their way into the lead in Sapphire Doubles at the 2016 USBC Women’s Championships on June 10.

Edayan led the way with games of 180, 180 and 202 for a 562 series, while Montez added 162, 161 and 215 for 538 and a 1,100 total. Suzanne Ruiz of Delhi, California, and Marge Vieira of Ripon, California, previously led with 1,085.

Sapphire Doubles features bowlers with combined entering averages of 290-319.

A look ahead

The USBC Women’s Championships will be joined in Las Vegas by a pair of top senior events starting next week, so bowling fans and Women’s Championships competitors can stop by and see some of the best USBC members age 50 and older compete.

Beginning on June 17, the International Training and Research Center Super Senior Classic will welcome the top super seniors age 60 and above to Sam’s Town Bowling Center to compete for the top prize of $4,000. The cashers’ round and stepladder finals will be broadcast live on BowlTV on June 19 starting at 11 a.m. Eastern.

The 2016 USBC Senior Masters also will take place at Sam’s Town, starting June 21 with the first of three rounds of qualifying. The field will be cut to the top 63 players and defending champion and USBC Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli for the double-elimination match-play bracket June 24. The stepladder finals will be June 26 starting at 1 p.m. Eastern. All rounds of the Senior Masters will be broadcast live on BowlTV.
