International players take control of the leaderboard in San Marino

    Swede Martin Larsen leads 210-player field with 1476 (246 average); cut for 35th place is now 1293 (215.50 average)

    2012EBT11MartinLarsen.jpg2012EBT11RobThurlby.jpgMartin Larsen (pictured left) of Sweden averaged 246 in the 13th qualifying squad of the 8th Storm San Marino Open Thursday afternoon at Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle to take a 41-pin-lead heading into the penultimate qualifying day.

    The three-time world champion, who is the 2011-12 PBA Tour Steve Nagy Sportsmanship Award winner, had games of 237, 221, 259 and 243 before closing with back-to-back 258 for 1476 total pins.

    Another three international bowlers added their names to the leaderboard in Squad 14 on Thursday evening. Rob Thurlby (right) of England led the squad to move into second place with 1435 total including a 299 in game two, the highest game of the tournament thus far.

    2012EBT04DominicBarrett.jpg2011EBT17ChrisKlerk.jpgChris Klerk (left) of the United States was 43 pins behind with 1392 to leap into third place in the overall standings. Thurlby's compatriot, PBA champion Dominic Barrett (right) was just one pin back to take fourth place with 1391.

    In the unlikely event that Larsen, Thurlby, Klerk and Barrett would fall out of the top 35 in the remaining two qualifying days, they still would be qualified for Sunday's finals by virtue of leading the separate leaderboard of Squads 9-14.

    Previous leader Massimiliano Celli (below left) of Italy fell to fifth place with 1388 followed by Timo Schröder of Germany, who was fourth in Squad 14 with 1369 pins.

    2012EBT11MassimilianoCelli.jpg2012EBT11SamiLampo.jpgRounding out the top 10 were three Finns. Perttu Jussila was eighth with 1360 and Tony Ranta was ninth with 1357. Sami Lampo (right), who led Squad 12 on Thursday afternoon with 1353 finished the day in tenth place.

    With another seven squads to go, three on Friday and four on Saturday, Diego Biolghini of Italy holds the 35th and last place to advance with 1293 (215.50 average), 59 pins higher than the day before.

    Laurence Gaillard of France is the best of just 14 women in the 210-player field from 20 countries and the lone woman among the top 35 with 1318 including handicap. good for 23rd place.

    Qualifying continues Friday, July 13, with Squad 15, 16 and 17 scheduled for noon, 4 and 8 p.m. CEST.

    2012EBT11SanMarinoOpenBanner1_small.jpg The 8th Storm San Marino Open is the 11th stop of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the second out of four EBT "Gold" tournaments this season. The tournament will be held July 7-15 at 18-lane Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino and offers total prize fund of 60.200 Euro with 10.000 Euro going to the winner, 6.000 to the runner-up and 3.400 each to the third and fourth place finisher.

    The San Marino Open features a 40 feet Kegel lane conditioning pattern with 24.3ml volume oil total.

    The qualifying of the San Marino Open (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Saturday July 7 through Saturday, July 14 with the last qualifying squad 21 scheduled for 9 p.m. CEST. The qualifying winner will receive a 1.000 Euro bonus.

    Qualifying concludes with the one-game Desperado Squad scheduled to start at half past Midnight. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire tournament, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 48 players will advance to the finals on Sunday, July 15 - the top 35 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 7-8, the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 9-10, the top 4 from the squads conducted on July 11-12, and the top 3 from the Desperado Squad. The top 8 qualifiers receive two byes and qualifiers 9-16 get one.

    The other 32 players will bowl four games from scratch to cut to the top 16, who will meet qualifiers 9-16 in round two. Those 24 bowl another 4 games from scratch to cut to the top 8, who will join the top eight qualifiers in single-elimination match play with the two game total pinfall determining the winner.

    The highest seeded player bowls the lowest seeded, the second-highest seeded players bowls the second-lowest and so on. The field will be cut to 8, 4 then 2, who will bowl for the title and the 10.000 Euro top prize.

    2012EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2012 European Bowling Tour is made up of 21 events in 16 countries including two Platinum, four Gold, eight Silver and seven Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish in the event. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament such as the San Marino Open 2012 gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.

    Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 16 men and top 16 women who will compete in the sixth EBT Masters in Bratislava, Slovakia in Sept. 2013.
