MejÃa & Madriz and Gomez & Nieves win in Doubles at 34th La Raza Tournament

Santiago MejÃa of Colombia and Costa Rica's national team member Rodolfo Madriz combined for 1963 pinfall total, an average of 245.38, to win the men's Doubles event of the 34th La Raza Bowling Tournament Thursday at Bowling Dent in San José, Costa Rica.
Luis RodrÃguez of Puerto Rico and Federico Reyna, Costa Rica, finished second with 1885 (235.63) with former Team USA member Vernon Peterson and Alberto Lizano, Costa Rica, in third place with 1874 (234.25).
The Americans swept the medals in the Senior Men's division. George Gomez and Bob Nieves led the field with 1844 and an average of 230.50. Phil Prieto and Paul McCordic were second with 1771 (221.38) with Ed Roberts and Rudy Moreno in third 1765 (220.63).
After the first round of the women singles event, Melissa Quiñones of the United States shot 922 and has a narrow nine-pin lead over Costa Rican standout Viviana Delgado with 913. Ana Karen Casteñon of Mexico is on third place with 879 pinfall.
USBC Hall of Famer Lucy Sandelin overtook the lead in the senior women's Singles with 877 and was followed by Teresa Archundia of Mexico in second place with 862 and Virginia Wrigth, USA, in third place with 771.
The 34th La Raza Bowling Tournament continues on Friday, Oct. 12 with the men's and senior men's Singles event (four games), while the women will roll their second four-game block of the Singles. The men's division bowls at bowling center Dent while women and senior men compete at Bol Cariari.
The tournament concludes Saturday, Oct. 13, with an Exhibition Stepladder Final for each division (women, men, senior women and senior men). The top 24 bowlers in All Events bowl three games with the top three in each division advancing to the live TV stepladder finals at Bol Cariari.
Each All Events champion and the first runner-up will be seeded into the stepladder finals. They use the three-game series to determine their position in the stepladder final.
