Generations Pro Bowling Tour #12

Georgetown Lanes in Fort Wayne, Ind. (March 10-12, 2007)

2007GPBT14BrazeauDickinson.jpg Brian Brazeau turned 50 years old on January 17, and on March 12 he won his first Generations Pro Bowling Tour title in the GPBT Indiana Open.

Brazeau (left), a pro shop operator and sales rep for Morich Bowling Products, defeated PBA Hall of Famer Gary Dickinson (right), 234-214, at Georgetown Bowl in Fort Wayne, Ind., Monday evening. Brazeau earned $8,000 and Dickinson claimed $4,500 as the runner-up.

In the championship match, Brazeau was in control the whole way. He started with a four-bagger, left a 4 pin, then reeled off three more strikes to seal the victory. Dickinson started with a spare, then got three strikes, but left the 2-4-10 in the fifth. He made the split, but never could catch up without a double in the second half of the game.

"This whole day is a blur," said Brazeau. "Good fortune was with me all week. I'm kind of speechless. I had to beat two Hall of Famers to do this, and it's just a fantastic feeling. I just called my wife, and she's crying - everybody's happy! This is just great, really great!"

"I had a decent start," said Dickinson, "but I didn't throw it very good after that split in the fifth. I made it, but never got it going again. Even if I did, Brian had a really good look and he bowled so good he would have been hard to beat."

In the matches to determine the Senior division winners, Brazeau defeated David Ozio, 216-193, to win the Senior division and Dickinson beat Ron Winger, 216-179, in the Classic division.

The GBT Indiana Open was the 13th of 17 events in the Generations Pro Bowling Tour's inaugural season, and it drew a full field of 80 top senior bowlers. Event #14 will roll March 16-19 at HP Lanes in Columbus, Ohio.

Brazeau and Dickinson go 6-0 to take the lead in GPBT Indiana Open

2007GPBTLogo_small.jpg Winning matches will get a good player to the top in a hurry, and that was the case for Brian Brazeau and Gary Dickinson Monday morning at Georgetown Bowl in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Both won all six of their matches to take the lead after the first round of match play (third round overall) in the Generations Pro Bowling Tour Indiana Open. Brazeau leads the Senior division with a 4379 total and an average of 233.28 over 18 games.

"For me, they were a little oilier today, and everything just fell into place," said Brazeau. "I've been working on my timing and it paid off today. I made all my spares today, and that helped me to some good scores. The key was that all the pairs played the same, so I got lined up very quickly."

Dickinson took the lead in the Classic division with 4290 pinfall total and an average of 228.33. "I had a lot of confidence coming here because I've only bowled here once before and won a regional," he said. "The lanes are playing outside and I like to play there, so I have a lot of confidence."

Going into the final round, Gary Smith is in second in the Senior division, and Ron Winger hold second in the Classic group. Qualifying leaders Greg Smith and Ben Hoefs dropped to fourth and third with the final round of match play to go at 3pm. The top four in each division will advance to the stepladder finals at 6:00pm.

Smith and Hoefs lead GPBT Indiana Open into match play portion

2007GPBTLogo_small.jpg Greg Smith and Ben Hoefs are the leaders after the qualifying rounds of the Generations Pro Bowling Tour Indiana Open. Smith leads the Senior division with a 2858 total, a 238.17 average for the 12 qualifying games.

Hoefs, bowling in his first GPBT event, rolled a big 289 game the last game to anchor his round two 1400 total. He is averaging 231.50 for the first two rounds.

"I drilled a new ball on the GPBT truck last night, and it worked out just perfect," said Smith. "Every week it looks like it gets longer each day, so I drilled something that hooked a little earlier."

"Yesterday, I ended with a 178. Today, I shot 289, so I feel much better. I misread some lanes yesterday, and today, I made better shots," said Hoefs.

Match play begins Monday at 9:00 am. The final Round of match play will be at 3:00 pm, after which the top four players from each division will bowl in a stepladder finals to determine the division champions. The two division winners will bowl a one game match for the event title.

Smith and Eagle set the pace in GPBT Indiana Open

2007GPBTLogo_small.jpg Local pro Greg Smith took full advantage of his home house knowledge to emerge as the first round leader in the Generations Pro Bowling Tour's Indiana Open at Georgetown Lanes Lanes in Fort Wayne, Ind. Saturday. Smith was steady as a rock all day, tossing a pair of 268's to anchor his 1462 total. He is averaging 243.67 for the first six games.

Dale Eagle, who won last week's event in Lansing, Michigan, leads the Classic division after round one. Eagle turned it on in games four, five, and six to grab the early lead with a 1429, a 238.17 average.

"I've got a little home court advantage on these wood lanes," said Smith, "but primarily I just bowled well and made the right adjustments and some pretty good decisions. It helps to have that knowledge, but you have to be ready for it not to work. Fortunately, it did work today. I missed three spares, but other than that, I bowled well."

"I just threw it as hard as I could today, and lofted it a little today," said Eagle. "That's a little trick I learned from Walter Ray. I tried to stay behind the ball as much as I could, and it worked."

Smith, a new GPBT member, won the $100,000 top prize in the 2002 High Roller tournament.

Round two gets underway Sunday at 9:00 am. After 12 games of qualifying, the 80-player field will be cut to the top 14 players in the Senior division, and 12 in the Classic division for match play, which begins at 9:00 am Monday.
