GPBT Tour #14

Northrock Lanes, Wichita, Kan.

2007GPBTLogo_small.jpg PBA Hall of Famer Dave Soutar won his first career Generations Pro Bowling Tour title in style, defeating Don Patterson 289-221 in the championship match of the KR Strikeforce Open at Northrock Lanes, Wichita, Kan. Soutar earned $8,000 for the victory. His brilliant career now includes 17 PBA Tour titles, 7 PBA senior titles, and a Generations Pro Bowling Tour senior title in only his seventh GPBT event.

Patterson also had a great day, rolling two 300 games in match play earlier on Easter Monday. His runner-up check was $4,500.

In the title match, Soutar left a solid 7 pin in the opening frame, then reeled off a 10-bagger and added a 9-count on the fill ball for the 289. Patterson struck on six of his first seven shots, then lost a shot wide, leaving a 2-4-7 split in the eighth, and Soutar never let him back in the match.

"Everything worked today til that split," said Patterson. "Dave owed me a whipping because I beat him in a big match last year, so I knew he wanted it. He's a great champion, and I hung with him until I shoved that shot out the window."

Soutar missed the first eight weeks of the 17-week tour nursing a knee injury he suffered bowling last summer. "I couldn't wait to get my leg in shape to bowl this tour, and after Matt Buxton helped me change all my grips last week, it is much better. I usually don't do very well on these high scoring conditions, but I carried better these last two days than I ever have. I think the offset grip gave me a few extra wall shots and 10 pins. This is great. My old tour room mate Dave Davis won in Columbus, and now this. I'm really excited about the next two weeks and the PBA summer tour. I think I can compete again."

In preliminary matches leading up to the final, Soutar beat Ron Garr 215-203, and Patterson defeated Vic Benedict 264-164. Prior to that, Patterson beat Mark Roth 258-236, and Kerry Painter 257-225. In Soutar’s Classic division (60 and over), Ron Garr defeated Matt Buxton 219-164, and he got by Gradie Creasie by a score of 225-185.

Next week, the GPBT travels to Interstate Lanes in Round Rock, Texas, near Austin, for the GBT Texas Open, and then the season winds up with a final event at Emerald Bowl in Houston.

Soutar and Painter lead KR Strikeforce Open Qualifying

2007GPBTLogo_small.jpg "This is the best I've bowled since coming back from my knee injury," said Dave Soutar at the end of the qualifying rounds of the KR Strikeforce Wichita Open. Soutar leads the Classic division (60 years and over) with a 3858 total for the first 16 games of the event at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kan.

The tall Hall of Famer rolled a 204 his first game Sunday morning, then took of with lines of 267, 278, 289, and 300. He earned a $100 bonus from local sponsor Rock's Dugout for the only perfecto of the event.

"I used the wrong ball the first game, then switched to my Total Inferno, and it was off to the races after that," said Soutar. "I really like the reaction of that ball. Matt Buxton helped me change all my grips during the break and this is the first time I've tested it. It's working really well."

GPBT Champion Kerry Painter is the leader of the senior group (50 and over) with a score of 3954, a 247 .1 average for the first two rounds. Painter, who won his first GPBT event early in the season in Ohio, was steady all day with a high game of 278 and a low of 235.

"Yesterday, the scores were pretty high for the guys that went direct to the pocket, so I polished all my equipment and just stroked the ball instead of going around it to play a steep angle," said Painter. After six games, they were hooking a lot, so I moved back in and finished with a 240 and 230."

Monday, the top six players in each division will bowl round robin match play, and the top four will advance to the stepladder finals immediately following the match play.

The final match of the day will have the two division winners against each other, bowling for the $8,000 top prize. The runner-up will earn $4,500.

In spite of a recurring back ailment, Benedict averaged a huge 254 in round one, rolling a 2032 eight-game series. "I couldn't have asked for a better start," said Benedict. "I made a ball change after the first three games, and just made the right adjustments."
