Venezuela rallies to win Women Trios; Rioux regains lead in All Events

 Alicia Marcano threw three perfect strikes in the final frame as Venezuela rallied to top Canada and win gold in the Women Trios at the American Zone Championships in San José, Costa Rica.

The trio that led the field after three games on the 41 ft. long pattern on Friday (1826), finished with the highest team game of 685 to post a tournament high 1861-series on the short pattern (34 feet) to cruise to victory.

Marcano led Venezuela with a 1299 six-game total as the team had 3687 pinfall total and an average of 204,83. Her sister Karen Marcano added 1234 and Mariela Alarza shot 1154 (pictured r-l). All three players entered the final frame with strikes in the eighth and ninth frames to help seal the comeback.

Alicia Marcano shot the highest game of 269 in the Trios event en route to post the highest three-game and six-game sets of the tournament thus far with 696 and 1299, resp. "Always I like the pressure," Marcano said. "It was a little bit hard to come back, but the energy of the whole team helped."

Canada, which totalled 3676, had three steady performances as Robin Crawford shot 1231, Kerrie Ryan-Ciach had 1228 and Isabelle Rioux shot 1217. Mexico with Adriana Perez, Sayuri Yamada and Iliana Lomeli took bronze with 3568. The two U.S. trios finished in fourth and fifth place.

Rioux's total propelled her into the lead in All Events with 3730. She leads Ryan-Ciach by 17 pins. Previous All Events leader Diandra Asbaty of the United States tumbled to fifth as she managed just 1134 in trios.

Action continues Sunday with the first three games of the Team event.

Venezuelan women lead close trios field; Asbaty's All Events lead gets smaller

Only six pins separate the first four spots after three games of the Women's Trios event at the American Zone Championships at Metrobowl in San José, Costa Rica. Bowling on the 41 ft. long pattern, Venezuela took the lead with 1826, 202,88 average, behind a 667 series from Karen Marcano. Alicia Marcano added 603 and Mariela Alarza had 556.

Canada's Robin Crawford, Isabelle Rioux and Kerrie Ryan-Ciach continue their great perfomance and sit in second place at 1825. Colombia's Laura Fonnegra, Rocio Restrepo and Paola Gomez are next at 1821 and Team USA's Amanda Burgoyne, Lisa Noor and Jen Petrick are fourth with 1820.

Diandra Asbaty of the United States saw her All Events lead get smaller with a 560-series Friday. Her 15-game total of 3114 leads Ryan-Ciach by mere 15 pins.

Action continues Saturday with the final three games of trios.
