2006 USBC Junior Gold Championships to feature $25,000 in added Scholarship Funds

The United States Bowling Congress has announced that athletes competing in the 2006 USBC Junior Gold Championships will have the opportunity to compete for an additional $25,000 in scholarship funds. The Junior Gold Championships will be held July 8-14 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
The amount of scholarship funds available has been raised from approximately $55,000 to $80,000 as a result of operational cost reductions, athlete sponsor support and increased athlete participation.
"Obviously we are thrilled to be able to provide the opportunity for Junior Gold athletes to compete for additional scholarship funds," said USBC Chief Tournament Officer Roseann Kuhn. "Much of the thanks goes to everyone involved including our sponsors, host venues, athletes and the event staff."
A majority of the scholarship funds will be realized by more than 200 athletes who advance to the semifinals but don't make match play. Last year these players earned $100 scholarships but for this year they will earn $200 scholarships.
For the second time in the event's history, the Junior Gold Championships will be a sellout attracting 1,458 participants. It is the fastest sellout in the nine-year history of the event and the first time it has sold out since 2003 in St. Louis.
Held on three different USBC Sport Bowling lane conditions, the Junior Gold Championships - which is an individual competition - is the largest youth tournament in the country.
The event will held in three bowling centers in the Fort Lauderdale area. Don Carter University Lanes will be the host center while competition will also take place at Don Carter Tamarac Lanes and Don Carter Boca Raton Lanes. In addition, side events will be held at Striker's Family Sports Center and Holiday Springs Lanes.
USBC Youth members who average 175 or better (boys) or 165 or better (girls) and who are members of the USBC Junior Gold program are eligible to qualify to advance to the Championships.
Junior Gold sponsors are the Pepsi-Cola Company, Brunswick, Storm Products, Ebonite, Hammer, Roto Grip, Dyno-Thane, Columbia 300, Turbo 2-n-1, Bowling This Month, and Kegel Training Center. Kegel is the official lane maintenance provider for USBC.
