Bowling Writers Association of America announces Chuck Pezzano Scholarship winners

    1975PBAHoFChuckPezzano.jpgThe Chuck Pezzano Scholarship winners were announced at the Bowling Writers Association of America (BWAA) Annual Meeting & Convention at Bowl Expo on June 28, 2011 in Grapevine, TX. BWAA President, Jackie Wyckoff, notified all winners prior to the announcement.

    The award is named in honor of BWAA, United States Bowling Congress and Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Fame journalist Chuck Pezzano (pictured left) of Clifton, NJ. It is in his name the BWAA has dedicated itself to creating a new generation of bowling journalists, photographers, artists and promoters by offering students who meet specified criteria the opportunity for growth and recognition in the sport of bowling. In addition to their financial awards, the winners receive a one-year membership in the BWAA.

    The 2011 Pezzano Scholarship Winners are:

    2011PezzanoScholarshipMattPerry_small.jpg1st place ($1,500): Matthew (Matt) Perry of Shelton, Conn.

    This bright young man attends Woodhouse Academy in Milford, CT and is a top junior bowler in New England. Matt proved himself not only to be an excellent writer but also a great promoter of the sport. He is President/Founder of the Family Night Bowling Organization, which promotes scholarship-bowling opportunities for junior bowlers in the area. In three years, he has awarded more than $30,000 to over 200 local bowlers.

    2011PezzanoScholarshipKennyMartin_small.jpg2nd place ($1,000): Kenny Martin of Pacifica, Calif.

    A student at San Jose State University with an expected graduation date of 2012, Kenny's entry essay, "Chasing 300," provided the reader a better understanding about the challenges involved in one becoming their absolute best. A teacher of his once commented, "as sports editor of the school newspaper, he was an invaluable asset because of his ability to brainstorm ideas, think critically and write well." Additionally, Kenny is currently bowling for San Jose State's bowling team.

    2011PezzanoScholarshipPhilBrylow_small.jpg3rd place ($500): Phillip (Phil) Brylow of Waukesha, Wis.

    With the help of family and the bowling community, Phil produced the TV show "Spring Youth Challenge," which aired on Time Warner Sports in July of 2007. Since then, over 100 hours of bowling programming have aired on Time Warner Sports 32, creating local stars from the ranks of the area's youth bowlers.

    Funds will be deposited in the student's school account prior to fall registration.
