11/26/11

PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss (pictured left), United States, is on course to defend his title in the IDM Bucharest International Bowling Open as he moved into third place in qualifying at IDM Club in Bucharest, Romania.
The 25-time PBA champion had games of 234, 234, 247, 229, 236 and 201 in the fourth and last squad on Friday (18th overall) for 1381 six-game total and an average of 230.17.
Spiros Vlachos of Greece held on to the lead with 1414 (235.67), the sole 1400-plus series of the 93 players from 12 countries. His compatriot Tommy Petersen (right) jumped into second place with 1382. Petersen, one of just three players who entered Squad 15 at 9 a.m., had games of 256, 199, 243, 225, 226 and 233.
Marco Cesare (left) of Italy led Squad with 1376 including a 279 final game and was followed by George Stefanidis, Greece, with 1360 en route to overtake fourth and fifth place on the leaderboard.
Romanians Viorel Simut and Marius Piticariu slipped to sixth and seventh place with 1345 and 1332, respectively. Rounding out the top 8, who will bypass the first round of the finals was Squad 16 leader Lars Nielsen, Denmark, with 1325.
As Vlachos (right), Simut, Piticariu and 10th place Steve Miller, England, are already qualified for the finals by virtue of finishing atop a separate leaderboard of the Squads conducted Monday through Thursday, Cristian Calagiu, Romania, holds the 22nd and last place to advance with 1250 or an average of 208.33.
Qualifying ends on Saturday, Nov. 26, with Squads 19-22 scheduled for 9 a.m., 12.30, 4.30 and 8.30 p.m. local time (CET+1) and the Desperado Squad following immediately after Squad 22.
The IDM Bucharest International Bowling Open 2011 will be held from Nov. 21-27 at IDM Club, a 14-laner with Brunswick equipment, in Bucharest, Romania. The tournament offers total prize fund of 15.000 Euro with 2.500 Euro going to the winner.
A total of 24 players from the qualifying (six games; unlimited re-entries) will advance to the finals on Sunday, Nov. 27: the top 18 qualifiers and the top 4 from a separate standing of the squads conducted Nov. 21-24 plus the top 2 of the one-game Desperado Squad. The top 8 players will receive one bye.
Qualifiers 9-24 will bowl six games scratch. The top 8 meet the top 8 qualifiers in the second round. Those 16 will bowl another six-game series scratch to cut to the top 8, who will advance to match play finals in best-of-three games format.
