Sweden sets the pace as Boys Team event reaches halfway point at EYC

    Wilhelmsson, Bergendorff, Rikkola lead in Boys All Events after 9/18 games

    2012EYCLogo.jpg Swedes Emil Nilsson, Jesper Svensson, Pontus Andersson and Filip Wilhelmsson led a field of 23 four-player teams as the Team events at the 25 European Youth Championships has reached the halfway point at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark.

    The Swedes, who shared the bronze medals in Doubles yesterday, rolled games of 866, 823 and the field-best 898 to set the pace after three of six games with 2587 total and an average of 215.58.

    Nilsson led the team with 687 including games of 233, 225 and 229 and was followed by Wilhelmsson with 673, Andersson with 650 and Svensson with 577.

    Trailing the Swedes by 67 pins were Doubles gold medalists Jesse Kallio and Niko Kurppa who joined forces with Juuso Rikkola and Saku Konttila to sit in second place with 2520 (210 avg.).

    Rikkola posted the high game and the high three-game series of the day and the highest of the championships so far with 278 and 756.

    The team from the host country Denmark featuring Markus Bergendorff, Victor Gundersen, Nichlas Christensen and Martin Ø. Pedersen was third with 2469 (205.75).

    Rounding out the top 4, who will advance to the playoffs after the final three-game block, was The Netherlands. Jeroen van Geel, Jordi Putman, Joshua Schuurman and Jord van Weeren chalked up 2467, an average of 205.58.

    The only other country with a 200-plus team average was Greece with Alexandros Molfesis, Konstantinos Xagoraris, Thomas Moeller Petersen and Stamatios Roros, who checked in with a 2437 series (203.08).

    Wilhelmsson leads the field of 101 boys from 29 ETBF member federations in All Events (combined results of Doubles, Team and Singles) after 9 of 18 games with 1977 pinfall and an average of 219.67. Bergendorff, who used the two-handed delivery, is second with 1973 and is followed by Rikkola with 1961 in third place.

    The boys are done for today and will return on Thursday morning for the second block of three games.

    The 25th European Youth Championships will be held from March 31 through April 9, 2012 at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark.

    The EYC 2012 is divided in two divisions - boys and girls. Each team consists of maximum four male and four female players, who must not have reached the age of 19 before August 31st, 2012.

    The players compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Doubles, Teams, Singles, All Events (18 games) and Masters (top 24 in All Events, single-elimination, best-of-three games). Competition starts on Monday, April 2 with the Boys Doubles and ends on Easter Sunday, April 8, with the Boys and Girls Masters match play.
