Alena Korobkova takes early lead in Women's Qualifying in Limassol, Cyprus

    Russian outaverages her nearest competitor in the first two of five squads by more than 12 pins

    2012WSCAlenaKorobkova.jpg2011EBT11EstherCheah.jpgAlena Korobkova (pictured left) of Russia toppled 1370 pins on day one qualifying at the World Singles Championships in Limassol, Cyprus en route to overtake the lead in the women's division with two of five squads having completed the first block. Korobkova sandwiched games of 166, 233, 206 and 221 between high games of 278 and 266.

    Averaging 228.33 for six games, Korobkova outraveraged her nearest competitor, Esther Cheah (right) of Malaysia, by more than 12 pins. The world and Asian champion was second with 1295 (215.83) after finishing her set also with a 266 game.

    2012KristaPollanen.jpg2012WSCEvgeniyaSmirnova.jpgThird place belonged to Korobkova fellow countrywoman, Evgeniya Smirnova (left), with 1290 (215.00). Fresh off her victory in the women's ranking at the Russian Open, Smirnova had six games between 202 and 233 to give Russia a 1, 3 finish.

    World Games champion Krista Pöllänen (right) of Finland was fourth with 1272 (212.00) immediately followed by former World Ranking Masters champion Britt Brøndsted of Denmark in fifth place with 1271 (211.83).

    Daria Kovalova of Ukraine was sixth with 1250. 2011 World Champion in Singles, Jacqueline Sijore of Malaysia was seventh with 1243 with 2009 world champion in All Events and Masters, Clara Juliana Guerrero of Colombia in eighth place at 1233.

    The women from Squad 3, 4 and 5 will bowl their first qualifying block on Friday at 24-lane Galactica Bowling Center (Lane Map Guide). All 56 women from 33 countries bowl 12 games of qualifying on the 41 feet WTBA Montreal oil pattern before the cut to the top 24 players, who advance to the finals Sept. 24 and 25.
