Three PBA Regional events with enhanced prize funds highlight July schedule

    PBA Regional Roundup; Four PBA members earn USBC Open Championships "Eagles"; Additional entries available for Lipton U.S. Open; Bohr, Dorin-Ballard earn 2014 Team USA berths; Doyle, Low early medal winners in PABCON Youth Championships

    This month PBA members will have an opportunity to compete in PBA Regional events in the East, Southwest and Midwest/Central regions that will include enhanced prize funds and first-place prizes.

    The July 12-14 schedule will include the PBA East Region's most lucrative event, the Appletree Eastern Classic, at Mid-County Lanes in Middletown, Del., with a projected $12,500 first prize.

    The PBA Southwest Region will host the Lubbock Southwest Super Regional presented by Track, with a projected $7,500 first prize, at South Plains Lanes in Lubbock, Texas.

    Also this weekend the PBA South Region will host the Thunder Bay Builders Spring Hill South Open at Spring Hill (Fla.) Lanes.

    On the July 19-21 calendar is the PBA Midwest Region's richest event, the IGRIND Autism Awareness Midwest/Central Classic at Tinley Bowl in Tinley Park, Ill., with a guaranteed $15,000 first prize.

    The PBA Southwest Region will conduct the PBA50 Horseshoe Casino Shreveport (La.) Southwest Open at All-Star Lanes; the PBA West and Northwest Regions will combine for the PBA and PBA50 Sands Regency West/Northwest Doubles events presented by Track at High Sierra Lanes in Reno.

    The PBA Central Region will host a "reduced entry fee" Don Kondas Memorial Central Open at Legend Lanes in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; and the PBA South Region will offer the PBA Wilson & Sons Termite Pest Control Super Senior South Open (for players ages 60 and older) at George Pappas Victory Lanes in Mooresville, N.C.

    Over the July 26-28 weekend, the PBA Central Region will host the Angola Central/Midwest Open at Angola Bowl in Angola, Ind., while the PBA Midwest Region will host a joint PBA50 St. Charles Lanes Midwest/Central Region Open in St. Charles, Mo.

    The PBA East Region will offer the PBA50 Mil-Ray Roods Eastern Open presented by Roto Grip at Playdrome Cherry Hill (N.J.); and the PBA South Region will conduct the PBA50 Yorktown (Va.) South Open at AMF York Lanes.

    Closing the month, the PBA Central Region will host the joint PBA50 Progressive/Gerdeman Insurance/Al Smith Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep Central/Midwest Classic at Al-Mar Lanes in Bowling Green, Ohio.

    1!Next weekend is the final weekend for RPI qualifying prior to the July 15 deadline to earn points for the PBA's new Regional Players Invitational program.

    PBA Regional Roundup: Brian Valenta wins first PBA Regional title


    201213PBABrianValenta.jpgTwo-handed player Brian Valenta (pictured left) of Lockport, Ill., defeated Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., 232-218, to win his first PBA Regional title in the PBA Midwest/Central Region Laraway Lanes Open at Laraway Lanes in New Lenox, Ill., on Sunday. Valenta also collected the $2,200 first prize.

    201213PBADickAllen.jpgThree-time PBA Tour title-winner Dick Allen of Columbia, S.C., defeated fellow PBA Tour champion Chris Collins of Savannah, Ga., 247-214, to win the 22nd annual PBA Gastonia (N.C.) South Open at Liberty Lanes Sunday.


    2010PBARPIPJHaggerty.jpgAllen, who led qualifying Saturday, posted a 7-5 match play record to qualify as top seed for the stepladder finals en route to the $2,500 first prize.

    PJ Haggerty (left) of Roseville, Calif., defeated Chris Warren of Grants Pass, Ore., 252-185, to win the PBA Vanessa Brown Homes West Open presented by Columbia 300 at Yosemite Lanes in Modesto, Calif., on Sunday. It was Haggerty's sixth PBA West Regional title and he earned a $2,000 first prize.

     


    Four PBA members earn USBC Open Championships "eagles"


    201213PBAL04JohnSzczerbinski.jpgFour PBA Tour players earned their United States Bowling Congress Open Championships "eagles" when the tournament concluded its 125-day run at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., on Sunday.

    John Szczerbinski (left) of North Tonawanda, N.Y., won the Regular All-Events title with a nine-game total of 2,228 pins.

    2013USBCOCLodgeLanesToo.jpgScott Newell of Deland, Fla., and PBA50 Tour competitor Mitch Jabczenski of Novi, Mich., were members of the Lodge Lanes Too team based in Orlando, Fla., that won the Regular Team title with a five-player team record total of 3,538 pins. The other three team members were John Gaines, Vernon Peterson and John Janawicz.

    PBA Tour titlist Anthony LaCaze of Melrose Park, Ill., was a member of the winning Team All-Events team: Junior Team USA Support 1 (Matthew Tuckfield, Steve Novak, Jeffrey Mersch and Erick Vermilyea).

     


    Additional entries available for Lipton U.S. Open


    The TQRs for the upcoming Lipton U.S. Open in Columbus, Ohio have been canceled but 72 spots for direct entry to men or women are now available.

    To enter call Kristin Warzinski at (817) 385-8451. All entries will be processed in the order in which they are received, and when the 72 spots are filled, the field will be closed.

     


    Bohr, Dorin-Ballard earn 2014 Team USA berths

(pictured left, l-r), former PBA Women's Series title-winner Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of Keller, Texas, and Kayla Johnson of Washington, Ill., earned automatic spots on Team USA 2014 during the United States Bowling Congress Summer Team USA Trials which ended Sunday at the International Training and Research Center in Arlington, Texas.

    2013TeamUSASummerTrialsCarolynDorinBallardKaylaJohnson.jpgYoung led the men's field of 31 players with a 15-game total of 3,418 pins (227.87 average) while Bohr was second with a 3,415 total. Dorin-Ballard dominated the women's division with 3,407 pins, topping Johnson by 214 pins (right, l-r).

    Young and Bohr are both former Wichita State University players. Young served two years on Junior Team USA while Bohr was on adult Team USA in 2008 and 2009.

    Dorin-Ballard, a USBC Hall of Famer, earned a spot on Team USA for the fifth time and the first time since 2011.

     


    Teen standouts in PBA competition Doyle, Low early medal winners in PABCON Youth Championships


    2013PYCU20BoysTriosUSA.jpgCompeting for Junior Team USA, two youngsters who have made their mark in PBA competition – Kamron Doyle of Brentwood, Tenn. and Wesley Low of Palmdale, Calif. -- were among the early medal winners in the PABCON Youth Championships currently underway in Puerto Rico.

    Low (right), the youngest to win a PBA event when he won a regional at age 15 in April, teamed with Matt Farber (left) to win gold in doubles with a 2,656 six-game pinfall.

    Doyle (center), the youngest to cash in a PBA event (a regional at age 12) and the youngest to cash in a PBA Tour event (in the 2012 U.S. Open at age 14), teamed with Greg Young to earn the doubles silver just two pins behind with a 2,654 pinfall.

    Competition continues through Friday and also includes Singles, Trios, Team, All-Events and match-play Masters events.
