Belgium's Giancarlo Ragusa wins Division 1 title at 14th BBWZ Int'l Youth Tournament

    Youth Euro Trophy event drew 160 youth bowlers from 8 countries; champions crowned in nine divisions

    2014IOGiancarloRagusa.jpg2014BBWZDivision1.jpgGiancarlo Ragusa (pictured) of Belgium averaged 228 in nine games round robin match play to cruise to the Division 1 title of the 14th BBWZ International Youth Tournament Sunday at Bowling Almere in Almere, Netherlands.

    Ragusa barely made the cut to the finals as he finished the semifinals in seventh place to earn the last boys' spot for the combined finals with the top 3 girls.

    All previous pinfall was dropped and Ragusa cruised to victory with games of 236, 194, 207, 247, 219, 212, 235, 235 and 267 and 2012 total including 160 bonus.

Gaetan Mouvereaux (right) of France finished with a big 259 game to help gran third place with 2005 and an average of 212.22.

    Hanne Nijs of Belgium was the best girl in the field in sixth place with 1873 including bonus and 10 pins handicap each game. Bauke Jespers, Belgium, finished eighth with 1826 while Girls 1 qualifying and semifinal leader Polina Kharmalova of Russia landed in 10th place at 1784.

    2014BBWZDivision2Boys.jpgThe top six Boys and six Girls in Division 2 survived the semifinal cut and bowled five games round robin match play in separate finals. Jochem van Sabben (pictured left is the podium) of The Netherlands outaveraged his nearest competitor by more than 35 pins to easily win the Boys 2 title.

    Van Sabben had games of 205, 197, 288, 279 and 187 (231.20 average) and added 75 bonus for 1231 total. His compatriots Erik Holvast and Jacco van Deutekom were distant second and third with 1035 and 1011.

    2014BBWZDivision2Girls.jpgThe Girls 2 finals (right)  were delayed due to problems with the lanes and ran out of time. The organizers had use the standings after four of five games round robin as the final results.

    Qualifying leader Denise Blankenzee (right), Netherlands, emerged as the winner. The 13-year-old totaled 785 pins including 30 bonus. Varvara Gryaznova, who led after the semifinals, slipped to second place with 761. Lindsey Paling , Netherlands, took third place with 708.

    2014BBWZDivision3Boys.jpgThe Boys and Girls Division 3 and 4 finalists as well as the top 5 in the Mixed Division determined the winners in a five-game block with the qualifying pinfall carried forward.

    Simon Kits (left), Netherlands, averaged 205.80 in the Boys 3 finals to beat out qualifying leader Kyrylo Gayduk of Ukraine for the title by 100 pins, 2056 to 1956. Stijn de Rooy finished third with 1936.

    Alksandr Nechipaev, who led Boys 4 after qualifying, posted the highest five-game block to cruise to the title with 2075. Mats Kerner, Netherlands, and Vladimir Yalolev, Ukraine, were tied for second place at 1891.

Natasja van der Stelt was mere 26 pins behind in second place with 1898 and Bianca Brommer, both Netherlands, took third place with 1850.

    Chanel Korsman (right), Netherlands, overtook Girls 4 qualifying leader Maroucha Stam, Netherlands, by 21 pins in the final round to win the title with 1647. Stam was second with 1626 and was followed by Masha Kucherenko of Ukraine in third place with 1593.

    2014BBWZDivision5.jpgThe Mixed Division was an all-Dutch affair with qualifying leader Vince van der Loo (right) taking the title with 1510. Renier Ruijs was second with 1451 and Danillo Boud posted the highest series in the finals to leap into third place with 1424.

    2014BBWZTournamentLogo.jpg The 14th BBWZ International Youth Tournament ran from February 1-16 at Bowling Almere, a 24-laner in Almere, Netherland.

    The event was part of the Youth Euro Trophy (YET) and was contested on a 40-ft. lane conditioning pattern with 21.56ml volume oil total.

    Boys and girls at the age of 21 and under and 18 and under were split into four average divisions. There was also one mixed division for boys and girls at the age of 12 years and younger.

    Boys and girls in Divisions 1 & 2 rolled seven games of qualifying. All other divisions featured six games. The following players advanced:
    • Division 1: Top 12 boys and top 5 girls
    • Division 2: Top 12 boys and top 12 girls
    • Division 3: Top 8 boys and top 7 girls
    • Division 4: Top 8 boys and top 4 girls
    • Mixed Division 1: Top 5
    All qualifying pinfall was carried forward. Divisions 1 & 2 bowlers rolled additional four games to cut for the top 6 boys and the top 4 girls (Division 1) and the top 6 boys and the top 6 girls (Division 2), who determined the champions in the round robin match play.

    Division 2 boys and girls played a five-game round starting at scratch. Players received 20 bonus for a win and 10 for a tie. Additional bonus was given for games from 225-249 (5 bonus), 250-274 (10 bonus) and 275+ (15 bonus).

    Division 1 boys and girls were combined into one mixed group to roll nine games of round robin. The same bonus and scoring rules as in Division 2 applied. The player with the highest pinfall total including all bonus pins were declared the winner.

    The players who survived the qualifying in Divisions 3 & 4 and the Mixed Division determined the champions in a final round over five games. The player with the highest 11-game total including handicap (Mixed Division) were declared the winner.
