Diana Zavjalova wins gold in All-Events and Masters

    Latvia leads medal tally as 2014 Women's European Championships concludes in Berlin

    2014WECMastersDianaZavjalova2.jpg 2014WECLogo.jpg 135 players from 26 European Tenpin Bowling Federation (ETBF) member federations participated in the Women's European Championships, which was held June 6-14 at Neue City Bowling center in Berlin, Germany.

    21 countries sent a full team to compete in all six disciplines: Singles, Doubles, Trios, five-player Teams, All-Events and Masters match play.

    As the sole player from Latvia, Diana Zavjalova (pictured left) competed in the individual disciplines only and bowled her six-game series in the team events in so-called make-up teams. The 2013 USBC Queens winner and 2014 Intercollegiate Singles Champion for Webber International University finished 14th in Singles and concluded the Championships with victory in All-Events and Masters match play.

    Zavjalova averaged 229.58 for 24 games (combined scores in Singles, Doubles, Trios and Team preliminaries, to beat out reigning All-Events World Champion Mai Ginge Jensen of Denmark for the gold medal in All-Events by more than nine pins.

    Zavjalova went on to win four matches in best-of-three games format to capture her second gold medal in Masters including a 269-210 win against England's Lisa John in the deciding third game of the title match.

    Zavjalova's fellow first team All-American member Daria Kovalova of Ukraine, who studies at Wichita State University, defeated Mai Ginge Jensen, 233-191, to win the gold medal in Singles.

    Jensen rebounded with victory in Doubles where she teamed with Kamilla Kjeldsen. The duo topped Nadine Geißler and Birgit Pöppler of Germany in the gold medal match, 430-416.

    The Trios final was an all-Swedish affair with Sandra Andersson, Joline Persson Planefors and Jenny Wegner defeating Isabelle Hultin, Ida Andersson and Rebecka Larsen, 585-577.

    England's Jo Allsebrook, Autum Chamberlain, Hayley Rumkee, Lisa John, Hayley White and Danni Hopcroft defeated the Swedes, 1049-1025, to successfully defend the coveted Team title.
